@Sylvhem "radically conservative" is a contradiction-in-terms, like authoritarian anarchist. This is a pet bugbear of mine. Otherwise, intriguing video.
Hey @bob do you think it could be possible to sync a bunch of #FreedomBone instances into a server mesh? Imagine 5 friends and I have FreedomBone installed on a spare device at home. They all sync their data whenever 2 or more are online at the same time, and as long as one is online at any given time, all the services they collaboratively host are available. Could it work?
Experimented with allowing #NoScript to set all top-level domains to trusted, allowing them to run #Javascript without me opting in. First time my browser almost crashed my system since the first time I installed NoScript. Thanks, but no thanks bloated JS developers of the world ;) #MakeJavascriptOptional!
@schestowitz the key questions for me are, can Purism deliver a working #librem5 to everyone who pre-ordered? Will it fulfill the PR promises that were made during the crowdfund? Can it reorganize itself into a functional organization with real #WorkplaceDemocracy (eg #PlatformCooperative or #BCorp), one that can sustain itself and deliver on its vision over the long term?
I want to give everyone associated with #Purism the benefit of the doubt, those who have left, those still working there, and those in projects partnering with them. it's worth reading the full comment thread at the #Phoronix article @schestowitz linked to. The best comment points out that this is a startup trying to do something highly experimental and survive in a toxic US business environment, so a bit of internal dysfunction isn't that unusual, let alone evidence of total failure.
Categorized lists of organizations/ projects, with short descriptions of them, save people a lot of web searching and skim reading of homepages and FAQs, and that's valuable. There are so many of us working on different aspects of ethical tech now! It's fantastic. But it also introduces a coordination problem. How do we combine our efforts effectively, to speed up progress towards our shared goals?
@Wolf480pl also this so describes my experience of high school in #NZ: > "It breeds a rebelliousness that actively drives kids away from the things they're supposed to be learning. Like many nerds, probably, it was years after high school before I could bring myself to read anything we'd been assigned then. And I lost more than books. I mistrusted words like "character" and "integrity" because they had been so debased by adults."
@Wolf480pl OMG this! "And I have no problem with this: in a specialized industrial society, it would be a disaster to have kids running around loose. What bothers me is not that the kids are kept in prisons, but that (a) they aren't told about it, and (b) the prisons are run mostly by the inmates. Kids are sent off to spend six years memorizing meaningless facts in a world ruled by a caste of giants who run after an oblong brown ball, as if this were the most natural thing in the world."
It's been a while since I saw an #OpenSource project talking explicitly about horizontal organization, consensus, a focus on avoiding and resolving conflict, and Code of Conduct violations dealt with by mediation. I'd like to see more of this. Anyone know of any other examples?
"The project tries to be as non-hierarchical as possible. Every contributor must abide by a well defined set of rules, no matter which role they take. For decisions we strive to reach near-unanimous consensus ... If possible, conflicts should be avoided or, otherwise, resolved. Even if the project is non-hierarchical, it is possible to define specific roles within it. Roles do not really give additional power but additional responsibilities." https://libav.org/about/
#ecosia.org is a search engine - based on Germany so subject to #GDPR - who give most of their ad revenue to fund reforestation. They are structured as a #BCorp and make regularly publish transparency reports on how much they earned and which reforestation projects they've given funding to: https://bcorporation.eu/directory/ecosia-gmbh
Sounds good. But I wonder what tech they use? It would be good to see some transparency on that too.
@msh > Lots of us here with shared interest in keeping VidCommons and WeDistribute going
I second that! I haven't seen much activity on the Matrix room yet. The new #SocialHub forum has a board called #Fediversity, which is for projects that provide info about the #fediverse, like fediverse.party, fediverse.network etc. Maybe we could have some coordinating discussion there? https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/c/fediversity
Being a #vegan, I was the ultimate #LCHF (Low Carb Healthy Fat) sceptic. But a while back I met a medical doctor who had great results with it, and a special person in my life tried it as a last ditch effort to deal with an "untreatable" chronic illness, with amazing results over the last 6 months. The more I learn, the more the science seems to back it: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/2019/07/16/683897/why-a-laxative-was-used-in-a-recipe-for-sausage-rolls
Here's a report on our third #VOICE testing session on Satuday, where we intended to test group voice chat on #Tox, but ended up having more success with #Wire: https://write.as/yt03jv11742w2.md
Our next session is scheduled for Sunday 2 November, starting at 12:00 UTC. We currently coordinate testing at: #voicechat:matrix.org
@kirch this is a story we can tell ourselves about the world, and there are grains of truth in it. But there are other, more hopeful stories of beauty and compassion that also contain important truths. Part of what depression does is to make the gloomy stories seem truer, and the beautiful stores seem more fictional. We don't need to pretend the world is all roses and unicorns to accept that it's not all as dark as the black dog paints it. If you need to vent, fellow sufferer, I'm here :)
