We have to be careful about claiming that anyone who has ever made a critique of Islam or Muslims is responsible for Friday's tragedy. That's not fair, just like it wasn't fair when some people tried to claim that every every greeny was responsible for the actions of the Unabomber. (1/2)
@wire what about Wire? It's annoying that their desktop clients are just the web client in an #Electron wrapper, but the #UX is excellent. Any idea how robust their crypto is? @alexl
#Mozilla's #IRL blog did an episode on moderation of online platforms "Today, we discover who some of these moderators are. We learn how this work affects their offline lives, and we explore how machine learning can help, and how it can’t. And I speak to Facebook to better understand how they approach content moderation." https://irlpodcast.org/season4/episode4/
I've been involved in many attempts to organize coordinated protests across the country, both successful and not so successful, so I know how much effort goes into a day of action like #Strike4Climate. I'm in awe of the amazing mahi done by all the rangatahi across the country, and around the world. To all the rainbow warriors out there, kia kaha, kia toa, kia manawanui.
Finally, the full horror of what happened yesterday in Ōtautahi, in Christchurch, in a city I spent years living in, broke the dam of my shock and disbelief, and I cried. #KiaKahaChristchurch
Today, when I found out the person who planned the mosque shooting had planned to do it in #Ōtepoti (#Dunedin), I thought of the Syrian men who carted away all our unwanted furniture when we left town, sharing it with other families, who had also fled the violence engulfing their home and made a new one in #Aotearoa, #New Zealand. I thought of the scarves my wife gave them, for their wives and daughters. I remembered how much they smiled, as they struggled with their new English to thank us.
Having a special type of account for official use, one that needs a post seconded by another team member to post things, would be a handy feature. Would also be useful for people who know they tend to go off half-cocked sometimes. They could ask friends to be their post seconders for a while.
@ctrlaltchaos no offence, but you're teaching Grandma to suck eggs. I've studied philosophy of science at university level (as well as psychology). Full disclosure; I didn't finish that degree, but I understand scientific method better than most of the easily-(mis)led skeptoids on the net, who 10 years ago were all dismissing climate change like Dutton was (I know some who still are), while I was joining occupations against coal mines.
@bhaugen agreed, and this was the point I was making here, and why I suggested the addition. Always nice to arrive back at the starting point after a nice discursive walk in the woods ;) @aral
@ctrlaltchaos there may be all sorts of subjects where the current "common sense" is wrong, and others where it is right. The only way to find out which ones are which, is to share information, instead of shaming each other for not taking the same position we do, and wasting the amazing research tools the net gives every one of us. The algorith is simple; #QuestionEverything, do careful reading and #CriticalThinking, share you results freely, discuss respectfully.
@ctrlaltchaos the classic example is climate change. People like #DennisDutton (founder of the #NZSkeptics) spent a lifetime dismissing AGW as "anti-science", anti-progress hippy bollocks. But over the last decade or two, the skeptics have checked their facts and found out that #TheHippiesWereRight. Now the "common sense" on climate change is exactly the opposite of what it was in the 1990s, when the news media called #GreenPeace alarmist for making what are now very mild calls for action on it.
@ctrlaltchaos ok, but if someone makes a claim like 'vaccines cause autism' or 'vaccination has lead to reduced deaths from infectious diseases', either a) they are just repeating something they've heard a lot, or b) they have actually done some reading on the subject and know where good information backing up that claim is to be found. I'm not interested in discussing science with people do a), it's just noise. If they know of good sources, why not share them?
