    @cstanhope
    > Social pressure is common (perhaps ineffective) attempt to counteract that.

    FYI it tends to have exactly the opposite effect. When people have made a difficult decision, one that goes against the grain of popular opinion, they are poised to defend that decision. Public shaming and guilt tripping just further convinces them those promoting the more popular position have something to hide.

    @tursiops most people who trust vaccines do so because of things they read online (or in some other media source). So what? Distrusting vaccines is a sensible default position, especially when it comes to children. The burden of proof is on those promoting them.

    @tursiops "this article needs additional citations for verification". Case in point. There are four primary sources there. Two from academic journal (one from 1985). Two articles from PR websites (ie strings of talking points) singing the praises of flu vaccines, the most profitable of all as you can get people to take them every year. They do at least include some references to primary sources. I'm curious to see how many of the abstracts say what the articles say they do.

    The examples in communication theory texts are always a bit ... well ... forced. But think about the conversations you have with the friends you feel most comfortable having deep talks with. Don't they tend to be the ones who want to know more about what you tell them, not the ones that immediately change the subject, or flip the focus onto themselves?

    #Mysterium is a startup that aims to build a fully decentralized replacement for commercial #VPN services. Their current beta tech includes both server-site software for running nodes (using #GoLang, #OpenVPN, and #WireGuard), a desktop client (built on #Electron and #Vue), and a mobile client for Android and iThings (built on #React). All licensed under #GPLv3. They've been at it since around 2016:

    A few things to keep in mind for everyone planning for a post-prohibition #NZ, after the #cannabis law reform referendum next year. The victims of prohibition deserve immediate freedom and clean records (for a start), and compensation from the proceeds of any legal industry that emerges. Both from the taxes levied by government, and from the profits of those commercializing the 'erb:

    One of the things I'd like to see produced from the #OpenAppEcosystem group is a comprehensive map of all the ethical tech organizations and projects, and how they relate to each other. Which orgs and mainly lobbyists vs. tech stewards? Which projects have similar goals, how are they different? What tech can and could inter-operate? This is kind of what I've been trying to do for the #fediverse, with the wiki that informs fediverse.party development. But mapping ethical tech in general is huge.

    Categorized lists of organizations/ projects, with short descriptions of them, save people a lot of web searching and skim reading of homepages and FAQs, and that's valuable. There are so many of us working on different aspects of ethical tech now! It's fantastic. But it also introduces a coordination problem. How do we combine our efforts effectively, to speed up progress towards our shared goals?

    From the #SSB principles stack 1/2:
    "Tending and pruning are not a stranger's duty, it is through near moderation and free listening that we improve our surroundings. Infrastructure is a voluntary act, multimodal welcoming is how we on-board people via diverse connectivity modes (technological acts of inclusion) as well as with greetings (words of inclusion)."

    If #vaccination is just a common sense thing, supported by all the evidence, how come this kind of intense public shaming and guilt tripping is necessary to convince people to take it up? When narcissistic PR strategies are being used to push something this hard, it makes me more sceptical, not less:
