Well, I'm all over the map—which is why I keep re-thinking this.

My original budget had been ~$1,400 with the goal of having a primary dev machine.

But my current thinking under $700 and to sink the rest of that budget into building a desktop that can handle the heavy lifting via SSH or x forwarding.

I'd be looking for a 14in screen with no preference for convertible vs regular. HDD space doesn't matter, but I'd prefer at least 8 GB of RAM (for Electron communication apps… sigh)

    > Also, you can get a BEAST of a thinkpad for the price of that chromebook.

Any you'd point me towards? The used ones I'm seeing mostly seeing have 1366 x 768 resolution, which I've heard can be a bit low for smaller font sizes (I haven't used one, just what I've read)

Thanks so much for your help with all this, by the way. Very much appreciated!

Yeah, I was actually looking at a Asus Flip with an Intel chip: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16834234776?Item=N82E16834234776

Reviews indicate that it's one of the best chromebook keyboards and it *looks* pretty standard (other than the lack of the windows/super key)

    > I have used crouton and totally blown away chromeos to run arch. It was usable but ultimately I got too annoyed with the little quirks and non standard keyboard of all Chromebooks and got a used Thinkpad. Way better experience and just as inexpensive.

Hmm, as you might have guessed, I'm considering this as an alternative to a ThinkPad, so that's useful info.

I'm a bit leery of used hardware due to some bad experiences, but maybe I should get over that

Do any of y'all have experience with running #linux on a #chromebook? How'd it go? Would you recommend it?

I'm not interested in dual booting; I'd purely be blowing away CromeOS and running it as a pure linux machine.

It's backup time! Have you done your regular round of backing up?

Remember the backup rule of three-two-one:

Three copies of anything you want to keep (minimum)!

    Two different formats (minimum)!

    One copy kept off-site (minimum)!

    I am boosting this advice.

    I agree with this advice.

I have not followed this advice :(

    > A day in the life of filling out security questionnaires:

This seems accurate, except that it needs some questions with the meaning of "yes" and "no" swapped to prevent anyone from mindlessly answering.

    from the same thread:

    > Intel offers [both] the 2500K and 2600K. But what is the largest difference between these two processors? Hyperthreading. Hyperthreading which was artificially disabled on the 2500K. What about the 2500 vs the 2500K? A little switch and bam, all of a sudden the multiplier isn't locked. Not only that, but on the K versions, you don't get some of the virtualization features. You know why? Because Intel flipped another switch (actually an efuse).

    > Not that I disbelieve it, but what’s the source for this other than this blog post?

I don't, though it is a blog I read regularly and generally trust to be pretty accurate.

Here's a reddit thread discussing the post, https://www.reddit.com/r/Economics/comments/h2b04/its_strange_but_it_works_intels_expensive_highend/, where commenters state that it applied to the 486dx and 486sx chips.

r/Economics - It’s strange, but it works. "[Intel's] expensive high-end processors were identical to the crap bargain stuff they sold, right up until the bargain ones rolled off the assembly line and they deliberately destroyed the math co-processor."

Still, though, you make a good point:

    > That's why you have a higher moral and inclusivity-ethical duty to put pronouns in your bio, relative to a person who has had to think about these things and all the social fallout that entails.

I'll give the matter more thought and may well update my bio.

If I'm caught between a desire not to give the wrong idea about my own identity and an opportunity to help others… well, the choice is pretty clear.

    > (Of course, the problem is that they might be a cis person with a gender identity who just can’t imagine what gender dysphoria would feel like. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to stick random cis men with estrogen and find out how many of them get dysphoric.)

Since first reading that post ~6 years ago, and can genuinely say that I wouldn't want to transition (setting aside sexual-orientation-compatibility with my partner).

    > I think you could probably tell them apart by asking them the old “what would you do if you suddenly woke up as a cis woman/cis man?” If they instantly understand why you’d need to transition in that circumstance, they’re regular old cis; if they are like “I’d probably be fine with it actually,” they might be cis by default.
