@PhoneBoy I read the thing, and I largely agree with the sentiment, although I think there's a gap. Protocol over platform is yes the solution but as long as any such capacity to remove the unfavorables exists, the church ladies of the Internet will try to use it.

@YoVinnie @TomNovak Hadn't heard about this. Sounds like it's because of specific posts from some holocaust denier guy. It seems strange to me that a platform has content policies about platforms it hosts.

@Economic_Hitman I'd also suggest looking into contributing to something open source. For instance, I have a former coworker who got poached because of his public contributions; they approached him, not the other way around. It's a way of settling the big question of if you can do the work. "Do you know library X?" "Well I wrote 3 features for the last point release."

@Economic_Hitman It is BS. First jump was a 20% increase. 2nd was 40%. 3rd was neutral but I ended up 20% up in raises. Etc. What will really lock you in on your career though is doing boring, pitiless stuff. If they ask about your current pay, deflect. That's a trap. Negotiate for what you think you can get and are worth.

@Economic_Hitman At the time I thought so. Retrospectively I had low expectations. It's hard to say because the industry and salaries have grown over the years due to the demand. I also graduated at a bad time. One of the guys on my senior project had dropped out for the late 90s boom and then started his degree again because he realized he needed it now to get a job.

@Economic_Hitman and yes, Quality Assurance. Good to have as experience but not my bag. I'd rather write algos.

@Economic_Hitman It was a *very* large, venerable company and I learned how much I truly hate large organizations (although I broke that rule) and it was filled with bureaucratic crap. I automated my job and spent most of the time on forums. I was told to do less work. My team lead literally couldn't format a floppy disk in Windows, but she had huge boobs and was flirty with the boss.
