@cybette depends if they listen. I gave up supporting my dad because he never actually did what I said :)

@HerraBRE I take my daughter to a cafe for cake & hot chocolate every week. Definitely one of my highlights :)
Social animals, yes, but it also teaches them how to behave in social settings. I want to be going out for dinner once they can stay awake past 8pm - but that means teaching them what's acceptable now.

@yarmo nice hack :)
Yeah, I might blog this, if I kind find a suitable section of my bank statements that are safe to share... ;)

@yarmo weeellll... Yes :)
Part "I need to better at finance stuff" and part "this'll be good text processing practice" but ... Wow, there are some hacks in this pipeline....

Thing's to do when on a long train ride:
* Write a parser for your bank's credit card PDF statements
* Write a parser for your bank's account PDF statements...
What, just me? Fiiiiiine.
It works though, PDF table handling (or rather, lack of) be dammed!

@DistroJunkie as a tourist, yes, it's good a few times. Sadly, I was not there as a tourist - and the people I went to see are on the opposite side, so also have to deal with central London. Ah well, needs must :)

Ugh, I do not like London. Too many humans, not enough humanity. Train home soon, yay.

@opal @kev just a small local unthemed instance. It had a period of instability and downtime, and by then I had more idea of how the Fediverse worked, so I moved to Fosstodon.

@opal @kev likewise, I had a Masto account on another instance, and decided to migrate.

Travel to/from work should be paid time. In this case a lot of companies will start to love the remote working

@kensanata my father once described "social media" as "personal broadcasting", and there's definitely people that use it that way. Such a waste.

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.
This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.
I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

when you think about it, the idea that software should scale is actually really weird. "sure this garden is nice, but how nice can it be if it doesn't grow to cover the entire surface of the earth?"
