Anyone using an alternative Android OS besides Lineage? Like GrapheneOS, CalyOS, /e/ etc. I hear about Lineage all the time, but I'm curious how well these other Andoid open source alternatives work. Planning on trying GrapheneOS on my Pixel3a this week. #degoogle
@joseph@kev@kelbot I feel like I'd really like banana bread if I didn't find bananas so terminally disgusting. That's really it's one flaw. Oh, and when people put walnuts in it. Cause, well, they're poison. Other than those things it sounds really good.
@mwlucas I'm an admin on Fosstodon, but I have no knowledge of any "escalating requests" regarding death threats, and I don't find you in a search of our past reports. Obviously death threats to anybody would be unacceptable behavior. Please indicate which users on our system have been engaging in this kind of activity. I'll verify those statements on their timeline and their accounts will be suspended.
@ataraxia937 I can't speak for Gab as I know nothing about how that system operates, but for Twitter there's a wizard when you sign in for the first time that makes suggestions. Librem One may have a problem with that as they don't have an equivalent feature as of yet, but they can still use the Trunk if they so choose. I don't think they're making that known, so it could be difficult for first time users.
@jordan31 They're like lists on Twitter. You create them add other people to them. You decide how they're grouped, and you can add them as their own column in the multi-column view. For example, I have one called Moderators. As far as I can tell though, and I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, they're always private.
The Trump administration is not the first administration to propose this type of thing. Even assuming the United States government would never abuse this if it were to happen, if the US government can break the encryption, other governments and corporations and individuals can as well.
@brandon I'm probably going to be buying my Mom a Google Nest Home Max when they arrive. She's in assisted living now, but there's not someone with her all the time. The Nest Home Max will work for her as a picture frame (which she'll love), and it'll work for me as a way to have an eye on her as much as possible. There's a long shot that she might be able to initiate video calls with my kids, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
@brandon No, I find voice assistants fascinating. I'd love it if I only had Mycrofts. I tried for years and years to get my parents using some form of electronic communication methods. I tried computers with Windows or Linux, and they couldn't figure it out. I tried tablets and ChromeBooks with no luck. A smart voice assistant seems like the sweet spot for them because all they have to do is talk, but unfortunately I think it's probably too late for Mycroft.
@brandon Depends on how you define "safe" I guess. I'm guessing a resounding "Hell no!" is in order though. I do have an Echo device in my home. 4 of them actually, but only one of them is on. 2 wands and one is a MotoMod for my wife's phone. I can ask to talk to Cortana at any time on the working one. I have many Google devices too. Smart home devices as well as tablets and phones. I know this is Amazon's policy, but I doubt Google's is much different. Oh, and two Mycrofts, but those are safe.
