@jonnykong Welcome aboard!
Hello Mastodon!
@mgallien I'm glad you're enjoying it. Belated welcome!
#introduction
I am using Mastodon and Fosstodon since a few weeks. I used to rely on a proprietary platform and so far I really enjoy Fosstodon (thanks for it).
I am working on the Elisa music player as part of the KDE project.
I am using FOSS and KDE and Debian since 2004 and a PowerPC laptop.
@anand So there's the standard common emoji that everybody has, and there's the custom instance based emoji. Those are emoji like :fosstodon: that are instance only. When you use them, they get sent, so people on other instances see the emoji you've sent and you can see theirs, but you can't use emoji from other instances and they can't use ours. That being said, there is an option for an administrator to copy emoji from other instances, so if you see something you want, ask.
@Logical_Error F-Droid would be a good logical choice, but I doubt they're going to go that direction. I don't think they're going to go the direction I mentioned either. I expect they've got their own store in the works. They've been working on an alternative OS for a couple years, though no one knows a lot about it. The problem is that creating their own store just fragments the market, and I don't think that will work the way they hope it will.
@daremo I think @switchingsocial has a pretty good list of stuff going, though I don't think it's all necessarily federated.
@cigarBGuitarEfx That does seem like something Apple would do.
@kelbot I suppose that fits me. I use two different laptops, and I have a desktop for a headless "server" in my house, but it pretty much just sits there. The other laptop's keyboard doesn't work, so it's plugged into all external hardware for it's use, so it's BARELY a laptop. The other laptop travels with me everywhere and I use it all over my house. I'd call that one my main.
Wow. It's been a long day. Time to curl up with a good book on the couch before going to bed a little early.
Oh, wait, I'm an insomniac with a job and kids, and it's not even 4:00PM yet. OK, back to work.
built myself a small #raspberrypi based handheld computer

@zidanerick They're just emoji. You add them the same way as you do to a regular message. :debian: :ubuntu: :fedora: :void:
@brandon Sure there is. There's a vast amount of technical knowledge regarding various parts of the industry you work in. You can use Fosstodon for research and troubleshooting, as well as suggestions for new products and/or methods.
@brandon Weird. I'd follow up with them. I know where I work there's a form you can fill out for blocked sites that you feel are incorrectly blocked. You have something similar?
@stevepurkiss We appreciate that. Welcome!
@brandon
He's the (main?) dev on the project. There's a Console mode in FediLab.
@brandon Meh, I don't know about your org specifically, but I know at mine it wouldn't cause a blip. Weird that they've blocked it though. Do they block other social media?
@stevepurkiss Hi. What? No "20 GOTO 10"?
@brandon What did you do?
