@MatejLach Free software has interoperability issues in plenty of other areas. You can't just focus on this one area and draw an unfavourable comparison based on that. Linux has implemented support for other file systems because it's a minor player and is frequently a dual boot OS. Windows is rarely dual booted at all. macOS is sometimes dual booted with Windows through Bootcamp, but extremely rarely with Linux, which is why it has ExFAT support but no Ext2/3/4 support.

@MatejLach You can choose to use any file system. Interoperability with most operating sysrems is a feature of one of those choices. This is not a problem of the free market. It's a tragedy of the commons problem, and it occurs as often in free software as it does in the free market.

"I'm a Mastodon leftie and I'm so special because I blame everything on capitalism, not humans being selfish and shortsighted, as they have been since the dawn of history and will continue to be until the world ends. Nope, it's definitely capitalism, because capitalism was invented by aliens and transplanted into our brains, and isn't at all a manifestation of the same forces that has made violence and exploitation prevalent throughout all of human existence."

@MatejLach Yeah, Linux is so much better. Every windowing system is fully compatible with the other, everyone has agreed on the same standard for audio playback and all package managers are interchangeable.
The truth about standards is that they'll always either be lowest-common-denominator compromises, all-use-case monstrosities that nobody wants to implement, or accidents of history.
At least there is a standard.

@fcr @plausocks The goal of reducing inequality and increasing job security is at odds with the goal of increasing efficiency and reducing personnel costs.

@fcr @plausocks FLOSS is beneficial in many ways, but I've been saying for a while now that it actually cannibalises the job market for senior developers, who are the ones who actually developed the major FLOSS applications and libraries. It has made it easy for businesses to just inexperienced (cheap) developers and use libraries instead of paying senior developers to do it. This is rational and efficient, but leaves more money in the hands of corporations.

Now to build a phone with the power of a personal computer, the playback quality of Yamaha HS-8 monitors, the recording quality of a Neumann U87 microphone, the photo quality of a Sony A7S, the video quality of a Red Epic camera, the image editing capabilities of Photoshop and the video editing capabilities of Final Cut Pro X.

None of the successful companies in the current Internet boom consist of hackers. It's full of people in V-neck sweaters who worship Lisp and academic computer science. Also, there are no hackers in hackerspaces. Where has my tribe gone?

@feld That theory was tested too, and it was found to be awkward and impractical compared to using a BIC. I think this is a case of the Mandela effect, personally.

Re: The comic I just boosted about Google...
Yeah, Google is the most glorified banner ad company in existence. Also, web search isn't all that exciting if you ask me. If someone had asked me to work on a search engine in the mid/late 1990s I would've passed on it unless I were desperate for a job. Such a dry and academic subject.

@Mainebot The most interesting development I've seen in the field of electric guitars is optical pickups, but guitarists are notoriously conservative and don't want a high-fidelity noiseless guitar.

@jk How many two/three-oscillator subtractive synths that vaguely resemble the Minimoog does the market actually need? An infinite number, it would seem.
