How could I not know the term "Truck Driver's Gear Change"? In Swedish it's called a "schlagerhΓΆjning", a Schlager rise, as every single Eurovision song in the 80s and 90s would go up two semitones before their final refrain.
How does Eurovision make it a "Schlager rise"? The Eurovision Song Contest is called "Schlagerfestivalen" in Swedish, the Schlager festival.
What's a "Schlager"? "Schlager" is German for hit song, actually the German term predates the English one and has been around since the late 1800s. It is literally a hitter, "SchlΓ€ger", without the umlaut.
In Swedish, and perhaps in contemporary German too, a Schlager is specifically the kind of whimsical glam pop song that would be expected to do well in Eurovision. At this point the terminology is a bit circular.
