Just observed a use of "kattpasta", Swedish for "cat paste", for recklessly and carelessly copied code. I like.
(English "cut" and Swedish "katt" sound about the same in Swenglish)

@Noch Nicht Hier Exactly. =)
Today it's nicer outside and I opened my windows last night already.
I'm sure it will get colder again in January, but for now the weather is perfect; sunny, yet just below 20 Β°C.

#HowToInventEverything by #RyanNorth about bootstrapping industrial society sounds like a great book and the topic is one that I am particularly interested in.
I might order this one as a late Christmas gift to myself.

@vam103 Thanks!
tomscott.com/newsletter/2023-1β¦ confirms it, any remaining videos have already been filmed and I wish him all the best in whatever he discovers he wants to do next.
There is a lot of the last ten years that I haven't yet seen! I'm enjoying the joyful snippets from Lateral and it's also introducing me to other great science-oriented creators that I have added to my feed. I haven't yet checked out Tom Scott Plus.

Things they also like that I already watched:
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundatiβ¦
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_All_β¦
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raised_bβ¦Foundation: Asimov's seminal galactic empire epic about societies and how they rise and fall. It goes very slow in the beginning, basically all of S1, but I like it very much. It is a very free adaptation from the books, which some people hate, but I like everything they added, there is creative and interesting new stuff in there. Asimov is great at world-building, not so much at dialogue and characters. This one has great characters, sometimes by merging several from Asimov's huge gallery. It also has more than 5% women and they are allowed pivotal roles.
For All Mankind: Alt history drama, what if Soviets got to the moon first and the space race continued with both sides establishing bases? I enjoy this one, actors are excellent, story is believable, there is little to no space fantasy, it's all within achievable technology. It's a bit slow-going and I took a break for more exciting superhero and space fantasy adventure series for a while. Expanse fans are lyrical over the latest season and I will get back to it once I catch up with Doom Patrol and in particular the Doom Patrol musical episode. π
Raised by Wolves: Very promising seemingly-hard scifi about settling a harsh biotope on Kepler 22b. The settlers are two androids and a bunch of embryos that escaped zealot persecution of atheists and a global civil war with a sun cult with Christian associations. as ot progressed it got more and more deeply into prophecies and fantasy and I got more and more tired of it, but I finished S2. Unclear if there will be another season. The evolving backstory of what happened on Earth kept me going more than the present-time story, which got more and more surreal. The characters and personal relations are great, including the exploration of android personalities.

Silo: People in a post-apocalyptic world trapped in an underground silo. The world outside is lethal. Or is it? Yes, it is. Or is it?
Beacon 23: Two people stuck on a dark-matter "lighthouse" at the edge of settled space. Slow-going world-building.
Extrapolations: Climate future anthology with loads of famous actors.

@michiel Sure, everything is just a matter of effort/money. They did it once, they can do it again. The difference is that TNG didn't use the VideoToaster until Season 7, everything before then was lots of practical effects and only a touch of VFX, maybe not even digital, for e.g. phaser fire.
For VOY and DS9 I assume all ships and stations are digital effects and reproducing an episode could mean a significant portion of the original cost for the episode.
Would enough people shell out for a remastered Bluray box that was more expensive than the TNG box? Would enough additional people subscribe to P+ or rewatch episodes on Netflix in non-P+ regions for an enhanced DS9? Lots of fans will stream the episode whether it's enhanced or not.
These people erase whole series from their catalog, already produced series, for underperforming. I don't know that they can be convinced they could earn that money back. π

When I read or write the romanized, phonetic names in Mandarin for places or things with which I'm well familiar with the Cantonese name, I still pronounce them in Cantonese unless I make an effort not to.
Except e.g. Guangzhou or Shenzhen, because I knew their Mandarin names first.

I may be making this up, but I think the B5 restoration team were lucky enough to find backups of the original LightWave 3D models and scenes that were used to render the B5 CGI on the VideoToaster. The Star Trek people may not be that lucky if they attempt a VOY or DS9 remaster. -

I think I've heard that the B5 DVDs used widescreen for filmed scenes and 4:3 for CGI scenes. The new remaster uses all 4:3, so that could be evidence against remade CGI. -

An example from the #StarTrek world is how TNG has been remastered from film but DS9 and VOY haven't, which is why ironically the older series looks better on your modern screen.
From what I gather, all three were shot on film, but the newer ones were edited at TV quality and had lots of digital effects that would also have to be remade.
Babylon 5 was remastered recently and they had the same issue as DS9 and VOY, but they went ahead and did the editing and I think the effects again. I would welcome a fact check on this.

Th reason I went back and watched these videos that I haven't watched for a long time, or perhaps never, was because Tom Scott made a video about music video HD remasters.
Some are brilliant re-scans and re-edits from film reels, and some are just upscales from TV recordings, either because those are the only originals, or because the record label was lazy.
Mercury's song is an example of the former, Smash Mouth's "All Star" is an example of the latter.
