No other TV series is a good as #DoomPatrol at being camp and giddy and tragic and dark within *seconds* from each other, it's quite the emotional workout. -

@Hypolite Petovan Liberation movements can and have been top-down, but the good ones are bottom-up and there is no head to cut off except a figurehead.

@Mans R One thing people have been bringing up recently is that subtitles have been using milder language than the spoken dialog, which is just robbing people of the intended effect when they're dependent on the text.
They're airing what's spoken, what's the point of censoring what's written? There isn't one, it's misguided at best, belittling at worst.

@Leif Lindholm It really is, and it shows when there is such a range from daily TV dramas where you can hear they're just reading off the page to a full Disney movie production where they hire local proper artists to sing the translated songs.
... and then you can listen to the three Scandinavian dubs and notice where they borrowed from each other and where they diverged. π

Why is the #dub different from the #subtitles?
If you guessed "different media, different limitations" you guessed right, but #TomScott provides the details, fun examples, and more about the art of translation in general, using his own show as a case study.

"This is feed", I say.
I add my herbal salt and garlic chili sauce.
"This is food!"

@Hypolite Petovan This whole thread is built on the presumption that space colonies are possible and worth it. Without that, there is no galactic threat to rise against either.

@Hypolite Petovan @Digital Mark Ξ» βοΈ βοΈ πΉ I imagine in a place like outer space with so much ... space, colonies colonizing is an exponential process.
Europe's colonization of the world didn't slow down from internal causes, it slowed down because Europe already controlled the world except Ethiopia, China, Siam, Japan and maybe a few minor spots.

@Digital Mark Ξ» βοΈ βοΈ πΉ Of Niven's books I have only read Ringworld as far as I know.
It had some hilarious things to say about genetic selection, one of them was how the most aggressive Kzinti all went to war against humans and died, meaning in a few generations they pretty much domesticated themselves until the remaining ones were reasonable enough to go for peace.

@Digital Mark Ξ» βοΈ βοΈ πΉ Nice. I suspected the classics wouldn't have missed it. =)
I just realized it's basically the Pearl Harbor story in highly idealized and sanitized form.
The answers there were (1) probably (2) no matter (3) strong maybe (4) no, see Eisenhower's military-industrial complex speech and what happened next
OTOH the idealized subgalactic civilization managed to stop themselves once. Maybe they could do it again.
... can we do it?
I guess I can truly say "we" as my birth nation has pretty much joined NATO now.

Sci Fi story prompt:
Humanity overcomes its tendencies for boundless expansion and colonization.
We go as far as Mars and Alpha Centauri, some orbital habitats, but then we calm down and find harmony with our cosmic environment. We're multiplanetary, we're looking long-term at what to do when our sun goes bad, and we have some probes looking further out, purely for science and curiosity. We've found some neighbors who are equally at peace, we have cordial relations.
Now we or our neighbors find signs of a colonial, extractive force in the galaxy, inevitably growing in our direction. It's an existential crisis and humanity removes its inhibitions. Do we have to become a galactic superpower to keep ourselves safe from galactic superpowers? What if our neighbors disagree? Is it ethically defensible? Will we know when to stop?
