@Matt5sean3 Yeah, I kinda of hate haggling too (I am not good at reading strangers) but my MIL is *brutal* so I let her do it.
Prices are also often all over the place: there's a high turnover in dealers, and newbies often either over- or under-price a LOT. You gotta find the latter type while they still have good stuff and before they give up on the business.
@Matt5sean3 Antique stores are mostly for tourists. Stuff is surprisingly regional. Hoosier cabinets (which I wanted for a kitchen remodel) are not to be found in Kansas (outside of pricey ones in antique stores) but you see them at garage sales in the Pennsylvania area.
Plus you gotta negotiate; list prices are a suggestion. The number of times I've loitered in an antique mall while the clerk calls a booth owner to see if they'll accept my MIL's lowball offer on something... phew.
@gemlog Hmm. I wonder if these kids would be up to that. (Many of these kids are primarily Spanish-speaking, and my Spanish is primitive at best, so are not always quite sure what's going on and just go with the flow.)
(I'm just glad the kids didn't insist on me getting out the plush dog, which is fine when I'm reading to one kid but when there's ten, Who Gets To Hold The Dog turns into a brawl.)
Decided maybe I should get the class a larger-format version of Puddle Pug (the little 4x4 book that came with the plush at Five Below) and discovered THERE IS A SEQUEL so that's what I'm getting instead, in a format large enough for reading to a (small) group.
Field trip with the littles: successful. None of the three behavioral-issue kids were there so I was a little disappointed, but I did in fact get a chance to read a book to the group (after lunch when we were waiting for the bus and the kids were tired, bored, ready for a nap and in need of a distraction).
@theoutrider I tried to get a picture of the back of the Walking Dead vidya game which had Don't Dead on the back, but apparently it failed to register me poking the screen. Did get a nice blurry picture of the arcade carpet when it finally fired though.
