That feeling when you are trying to debug an issue in a C program, and you end up comparing amd64 assembly.

The error is on this line:

    ใ€Œguint32 hi = GUINT32_TO_BE(id >> 32);ใ€

Where `id` is `guint64`, and has the value of `1` when the issue occurs. Locally, this gets compiled into a huge mess of byte swapping code. On the build host, it uses the CPU's `bswap` instruction.

    WTF.

@joop @rysiek Considering the "hair" is a continuation of the mouth... that's an impressive moustache. Or... well... half of it?

Not to mention that there are other variants, like >;), ;), O:), :(, and so on. It doesn't make sense to use รœ for one, and a rotated one for the others. Consistency matters!

@rysiek รœ is quite a BIG mouth, small eyes, while :) is not so big, just wide. With :) proportions are better. Not to mention that รœ may look *very* different depending on the font, not quite like a smile, while :) remains recognisable.

Case in point: any Serif font will add cheeks to รœ, handwriting makes it non-smiley-like, some fonts will make the left and/or right sides bolder, and so on.

@ckeen Chromium's developer tools, network tab, force reload. Not the most scientific way, perhaps not even the most accurate. But it sounds reasonably correct, and required no setup or anything. :)

By dropping Bootstrap, MouseTrap, FontAwesome, and a custom font I only used for the page header, I'm down to ~40k average, with no other changes. The page still looks reasonable too. Perhaps even better, because fonts are bigger.

This is a good start. Will need to figure out a few things, patch up the few places that relied on FontAwesome, and this can go live.

@liw Oh, most of mine do. I find it pretty fun to throw ideas around, bounce it by people, let them tear it apart, see it fall apart, and then rebuild something new, slightly better. Repeat until it works.

Sometimes I feel like a barbarian. But then, ugh ugh me smash keyboard, pretty lights happen, and I'm good. :>

On to the margin of new year's eve: there's this silly tradition of firing rockets, fireworks and all kinds of stuff around. Can we *please* stop doing that? Not only is it noisy, and scary as fuck for toddlers, dogs, and to some extent, even adults; but when I take down the trash at 4am, long hours after the neighbourhood stopped being idiots, I could literally cut the smoke. It wasn't fog. It was thick and heavy smoke, sitting on top of the whole area.

Spring 2017: Mastodon, huh? Interesting; let's see who's on this.

Summer 2017: Cool, but I wish I could find more folks to follow on the Fediverse.

Autumn 2017: All right; we've finally got enough folks to make this feel vibrant and alive. This is grand.

Winter 2017: OK, there's too much going on here; I'm having trouble getting stuff done so if you all could be a little less interesting for a bit...

It also turns out that implementing the part of the EventDispatcher patchset against #Kaleidoscope that is the most pressing (pluggable HID libraries) is trivial to do. All that was needed was a spark that lit the fire that burned the first attempts down.

Well, no one died! Even better, people under 3 years actually enjoyed the gathering! People above were 50-50%, parents were a wee-bit overwhelmed. Overall, this was nice. Not sure I'd do it again, not with so small kids. But next year, they'll be almost a year and a half, which will make a whole lot of things easier.

Now to rest a good few days...

It's that time of the year when I'm thinking about dressing up my personal website in a new dress. This time, I'd likely go with something minimalist. Kinda like @psztrnk did. Perhaps not that minimal, but something very close to it.

Yesterday: Twins' first Christmas. They loved the tree.
Today: First big family gathering, at the in-laws. They loved the tree, and being the center of attention.
Tomorrow: Second big family gathering, at my parents. Two pair of twins, and two other kids.

This holiday season is one we'll always remember. In-laws doubling their grandchildren, my parents going from one to six in the span of 6 months. And now we *all* meet.

This morning, shortly after preparing our Christmas dinner, when we were about to bake a cake, the Twins woke up. Panicked, my wife exclaimed: "Oh no! We have no desserts, what will we do? We can't have Christmas without sweets!"

    This was under our tree:

The bundle has been sent, recipient notified multiple ways, I'm hoping she'll find as much joy in the books as I did. For those of you who voiced their interests, there were others offering the same sponsorship, I have let them know about you.

Thank you everyone for sharing my toot far & wide! Happy holidays!
