Where's a trustworthy place to buy replacement laptop batteries? Searching around I find a ton of 1 star reviews and horror stories, but no nice stories.

@opendork lmao how does a conversation shift from taxes to trans people?
coworker 1: I filed my taxes this weekend, i hate taxes.
coworker 2: oh yeah, speaking of stuff i hate: HOW ABOUT THEM TRANS PEOPLE?
coworker 1: fuck, right? why would people want to be treated like humans with rights?
coworker 2: what's next? women?
coworker 1 & 2 give high fives and ass slaps.

IANAL, but in Canada at least, it is illegal to have hidden recording devices for single party consented interception of private conversations. (i.e. pulling out your phone and taking a video of an interaction that you are part of is totally legal)
The law states in this case: ""intercept" includes listen to, record or acquire a communication or acquire the substance, meaning or purport thereof."
Seems pretty cut and dry

folks who own "smart speakers" / "home assistants" should be required to disclose its presence with one of those "Smile, you're being recorded" signs.

@cosullivan personally not yet. my primary use case is shipping value around to a small network of geographically diverse people where fees would get crazy if it were via stripe/paypal/whatever. for that it works great.
globally, there are a number of banks who leverage the stellar network to settle cross border / inter-bank transactions via some IBM software suite. that seems to get the most press.

@cosullivan the biggest hurdle people have had in my keybase friends is getting some XLM to start with.
People that didn't readily have any crypto to seed their wallet had a harder time "filling up" because they were unfamiliar with exchanges or trading fiat for crypto to begin with.
AFAIK they don't offer any sort of fiat gateway, but there are stellar exchanges (interstellar.exchange is popular) where you can swap most common cryptos for XLM and vice versa.

@cosullivan here's an example of a TX from my wallet:
20 XLM was sent, 0.00001 XLM in fees.
It's really just a Stellar network wallet baked into their client, so they're not charging anything ontop and are helping facilitate storage of your private keys (which you can export to any other stellar wallet) and network communication.

#zfs experiment update with 64MB log device.
I think it may only effect throughput, the behaviour seems to be fill -> empty -> fill -> empty with `txg_sync` doing a lot of heavy lifting more often then every 5 secs.
It seems like the zfs_txg_timeout default of 5 seconds if more of a "goal" for zfs to hit, and if there are extenuating circumstances it will trigger a txg sync

TIL: zfs doesn't like devices smaller than 64MB, and will silently shit the bed on it and refuse to add one as a log device.
RIP my 10kb SLOG device for testing.

#zfs users, what literally happens when a dedicated log device fills up before the rolling flush?

@fribbledom these are the first takes i've actually heard of someone trying to use peertube.
i wonder if the transcoding / limits you're running into are pervasive, or maybe per host?
sucks to hear you're running into roadblocks

The web browser Brave is marketed as a privacy-friendly ad-free alternative, but that's pretty disingenuous.
Brave exists not to protect privacy, but to make money from selling ads.
Brave is a commercial company funded by venture capital. Its business model is selling advertising and cryptocurrency investment.
One of Brave's owners is Peter Thiel's Founders Fund. Thiel is also the head of Palantir (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir_Technologies) and on the board of Facebook.
I do not recommend using Brave.

@ThatGeoGuy short story: unfortunately, probably not. upgrades for our instance will take a ton of work, and we're likely to migrate to pleroma way before syncing back up with upstream mastodon.
I'd dig back in my post history for the last time I was talking with our locals about upgrades but I'd be clicking "older posts" for 30 minutes. :/
