@asovereignscot @Owen_Roberts @fitheach @simon_brooke @samis Couldn't agree more. The Opposition are just as pig-headed about Brexit as the Government.
As a working-class Northern English person I find it patronising. Labour MPs assume we're all Brexit-mad and if they come out against it we'll vote UKIP. It's a very out of date and inaccurate view of the communities they're meant to be representing.
@andybroomfield Also, I really dislike the way it 'talks' to you when you visit the site, like it's your cool Californian mate.
"Your first three are on the house! [soft paywall]"
"Hey, I've seen you here before, let's make things official [sign up]"
Little things, but they really get on my tits.
@asovereignscot @fitheach @simon_brooke Isn't whisky similar, uisge beatha in GΓ‘idhlig which translates to something like 'water of life'?
@nev That "content is not available in my area". What happened?
@andybroomfield I'm not sure about Medium, it seems a bit like you're giving your content to someone else to make money off.
I'm not looking to make any money, but would prefer to stay in control of what I've written rather than hosting it elsewhere (especially the USA).
@nev It means there's lots of annoying ragwort because I haven't had time to tend the garden this year, but if I keep getting cinnabar moth caterpillars there will be no ragwort soon.
@nev My garden is full of yellow-and-black striped caterpillars, apparently they are the caterpillar of the cinnabar moth.
All I need is a basic blog.
- Posts on the homepage in reverse date order, newest first
- Individual posts on their own page
- RSS Feed
WordPress feels like overkill, the interface is like swimming through treacle, it feels overcomplicated and overengineered for what I need.
@nev At minimum, I want a list of posts in reverse date order on the homepage, the ability to view an individual post on its own page, and an RSS feed. Can these systems do that?
If I wanted to start blogging but didn't want to suffer WordPress, what would be a good alternative? I find the WordPress admin interface not especially conducive to sitting and writing, it's too cluttered and full of CMS features that I don't want/need.
I have my own server (well, VM) and competence in installing stuff, so no worries in that department.
@tieflinux Northern Ireland needs more flegs
@t54r4n1 It's usually men (who don't follow me, and I don't follow them) who slide into my notifications and start "sea lioning" (a cool word I learned recently) when I post something slightly tech related
@porsupah I wish I could still drink whisky! I miss it, but I don't drink anymore.
I'm doing better than I was, but I don't have the money to spend on hotel rooms and things at present. :(
@Antanicus The real question is - is Forbes anything more than an ad-slinger? It's one of the spammiest sites out there.
@porsupah Hopefully it won't be as bad as the notorious "Blackpool Comes To Oldham" which, true to its name, turned into an actual drunken riot.
@porsupah The other problem is we've got a funfair over the road for the next couple of weeks.
The circus uses the same site, but it's not a problem because they knock off at about 9pm and it's all families and kids. The funfair is noisy into the night and seems to attract scallies.
@nev Or just go full Ulster and set fire to some buses.
@nev That all looks very civilised. You need a blimp lampooning whoever it is you're protesting against.
@porsupah Don't get me started on our local newspaper.
It's called The Press, and it's owned and run by a racist who counts Tommy Robinson as a friend. They publish Tommy Robinson's books as well as a newspaper.
It regularly prints racist and homophobic rants and they didn't even give it a rest after our MP, Jo Cox, was murdered.
They quite often print actual threats towards named individuals, too, usually local figures in the Asian community.
