This NY Times article is a positive look at England fans celebrating the current run in the World Cup:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/10/world/europe/uk-world-cup-england.html

Half-way down, there's a photo of fans captioned "Celebrating in London on Saturday". They don't seem to have noticed that the NHS Ambulance in the picture is dented and trashed? There's nothing positive about smashing public property.

Did anyone else see John Cleese on Newsnight last night? What a pompous arse.

At one point, he turned to someone off-camera who was talking and said "I'm sorry, am I interrupting your conversation?" like a schoolteacher.

Mythic Beasts host on actual RPis in the UK but the cost is more than a fairly decent VPS so not much point

If Elon Musk doesn't like being called a billionaire he should take a note from the old joke:

Q: How do you make a small fortune?
A: Start with a large fortune and launch a radio station

@StuC Very few community radio stations share time with a local station here - I think there are still a couple in northern Scotland sharing time with a regional commercial station.

Here, community stations get their own frequency but the transmitters are so low-powered that the coverage is questionable at best. You can just about reach a small town or a city suburb with the allocated power (about 5km radius).

I had to put my passport number and expiry date into a form earlier on.

You know you are getting old when you look at the date and think "I'm going to expire before that passport does"!

@StuC I used to work in community radio professionally, but not any more, there's no funding to pay anyone to co-ordinate anything which is why most community radio stations consist of engaging, valued local programming like Dave Doubledecks' 70s Soul Hour.

When you can't train volunteers in the process of making radio for an audience, it becomes a procession of self-indulgent disco DJs playing their favourite tunes to nobody.

@bobstechsite The radio where I am at present is even worse. Something incredibly dull called Silk 1069 is the only option with a clear signal. It consists largely of adverts for loophole lawyers who can get you out of a driving ban.

I am getting to the point where I can't listen to this nonsense any more. As amusing as it is to listen to British radio stations which are a daily 18-hour exercise in filling airtime, some of the dross being talked is getting on my nerves now.

We need radical radio. Not on a puny 20-watt transmitter covering half of Hebden Bridge, but on a national scale, to remind people that another life and another civilisation is possible, what we have isn't How It Always Has To Be.

On the radio: "Eating is like putting petrol in a car. We need fuel. If we don't have fuel, we can't work."

What a reductive, depressing view of the world.

    dear website designers:

that thing you do, where i scroll down and down and when i hit the bottom of the article, oh whoops! suddenly i'm at the top of a completely different page?

that is fucking abysmal design. it's user hostile. it makes your website unusable. it makes me NEVER EVER want to come back to your website. for anything. more to the point, it tells me that YOU don't want to use your website either. and nor do the people who pay you.

@wolfie They were the B-team to start with. The most talented in the Conservative Party (and that's not saying much) all got axed after the Brexit referendum.

Now even the B-team is starting to fall apart, who are they going to turn to? The Under 21s?

@Antanicus To be fair, the Park Hill flats were built by Sheffield council, which at the time was decidedly socialist.

The recent renovation by private developers has its critics, and I don't agree with the repurposing of social housing for profit, but it does look a lot better and is now one of the city's more desirable places to live.
