@bobstechsite I hope they lose and I hope it happens before penalties. The bloke next door screams at his wife and kids if England lose or play poorly, or there's any stress in the match.

Knocking England out now would be like tearing off a plaster, a short sharp pain but infinitely preferable for them to the long, anxious wait for England to get knocked out in some subsequent match.

The sanity of the woman and children next door are more important than football.

@priryo In all seriousness noise is a big issue here now but there are so many potential answers.

Why do we still have humans living in Victorian-cheapo terraced houses with permanent traffic jams right outside the front door? Move the people into fit-for-2018 housing and knock down the unfit buildings.

And so much noise avoidance is basically not being a nob. Don't move into a semi detached and hang the TV and speakers on the shared wall, for example.

@scarlett @ghost_bird We're already a haven for very dodgy money.

London, by some measures, is the most corrupt city in the world based on the amount of oligarch and dictator money sloshing around the place, especially in property.

A lot of the money going into London property, football etc is stolen from developing countries by the powerful.

@ghost_bird Anyone who's actually in business, as in they buy and sell goods and services for a profit, is going to be in favour of the EU. More customers and easier supply lines are better.

Anyone in the kind of business that relies on people having no real option, like rentiers and landlords, is going to be against people having the option to go to other countries.

Part of why I am f***ed is that my EU sales have all but dried up. And that's before Brexit.

@ghost_bird Perhaps this is part of the current right-wing Tory push for a hard border with the rest of the EU.

They don't care that much about the EU itself, leaving with no deal is just a convenient way to throw up barriers for humans between Britain and other countries.

Money, and rich people, always find a way to slither around even the hardest of borders so they won't be affected. But a collapse in the UK means we won't cost them as much money anymore.

@ghost_bird The future of these jobs is scary, too.

One 'shared service' centre in Leeds receives about 70,000 PAPER invoices a day in the mail from NHS suppliers. There is a team opening and scanning them, another team inputting them into the computer system.

This is work that literally won't exist in as little as 2-3 years' time, they are already moving on to e-invoicing. What happens to Northern cities when this gruntwork is gone?

@amphetamine I can't stand the fawning when a tech company suggests that it might come to a country or a city, especially when it's a bloody data centre.

Anyone who knows anything about tech knows a datacentre is a building full of servers and requires just a few people to keep it going. Why governments keep throwing tax breaks and subsidies at companies wanting to build DCs is beyond me.

@ghost_bird One of our biggest issues up here is that "good" jobs don't come here. Non-manual employment in our Northern cities largely consists of cheaper outsourced functions of businesses based elsewhere, mostly London.

Call centres, finance/accounting, shared service (admin) centres for businesses whose higher-paid staff are generally based in more affluent areas. The money is being generated elsewhere and doesn't stay up here.

@ghost_bird We're in a bad situation when opportunities in the capital of our own country aren't accessible to people from other parts of this country because of the cost of living.

The gulf between where I live now and even peripheral London, and other SE towns (Oxford, Cambs, MK, Reading) is insurmountable. But there are unfilled jobs in those places, and unemployed people up here.

@ghost_bird The disadvantage of working in London is that if you're on the UK average wage, you live with 12 other people in a lock-up garage just outside Coventry.

So my business' cashflow issue has got to a point where it's no longer solvent - there's nothing left in the pot at all.

I need to find something else, if only temporarily to get back on my feet and pay next month's household bills.

I have good Linux sysadmin skills and 3 years experience doing it for a nonprofit. I'm also a competent copywriter for web and audio.

Any pointers to anything - remote especially - would be greatly appreciated. Location is N. England.

@ghost_bird I've always been an 8am-4pm person if I can wangle it at all.

Work hours in office jobs here have got so long lately, though. The ads I've been looking at recently have been like 8:30am-5:30pm and a loooong lunch because they know you'll just work through it because the office is in the arse end of nowhere.

@ghost_bird They did that at my last office job, kept hiring and hiring more and more and more temps but not putting in any facilities to accommodate them - desk space, toilets and facilities, car parking.

It came to an end when they realised they didn't need all the temps they'd hired and suddenly got rid of every single one. You wonder who's running these places?

@DC7IA It does here, too. 999 for emergencies is free, but that's only if someone is in immediate danger. To call and say "I've had something stolen" or "I was attacked earlier" is the 101 number and chargeable.
