"Itβs hard to pin down what Facebook is because the platform replaces labor that was previously invisible. We have a hard time figuring out what Facebook actually is because we have a hard time admitting that at least part of what it supplanted is emotional labor β hard and valuable work that no one wants to admit was work to begin with."
I can't believe #socialcoop is already a year old!

We've still got a long way to go on many fronts, but I'm so grateful to be part of such a thoughtful and committed crew of folks who're sharing the load in making this a Good Place to Be!
We're now the 92nd largest instance in the #fediverse, with 962 registered users, who've tooted 63,409 times. Our #OpenCollective has 138 supporters whose combined contributions give us a current annual budget of $4,028! π
@tindall This also highlights the question of #instance#succession, sustainability, and accountability. If you're leaning on a benevolent dictator, it works until either the dictator's energy or benevolence runs out.
As Mastodon matures, we're going to see lots more of these situations as folks who spun up instances on a whim/as a hobby burn out and decide to move on. The question will be who takes them over, or what sustainable models folx will migrate to?
It does look like #hiveway has pulled some amateur-hour shit, and I am very curious to see how they respond to getting called out.
If they turn out to be not totally scammy, there's some interesting intention around a self-governed fully decentralized #mastodon instance. We've been learning a lot about instance self-governance at #socialcoop, and still have much to figure out, so I'm curious as to the in-depth rationales for their architecture.
I knew abstractly that there was a naive liberal cult of personality around #ElonMusk, but seeing its extent on social media since his latest stunt has been a bit depressing...
Starting a de novo #coop (vs. the conversion of an existing business) is avery different process from what is hegemonically understood as #entrepreneurship.
@katebowles@nev The two institutions that are doing the most, in North America at least, are the University of Saskatchewan and St. Mary's in Nova Scotia.
The #Vermont Solidarity Investing Club celebrated our first year in existence tonight at our annual meeting at #Burlington#Cohousing! Since coming together as a group, we've aggregated and invested a bit more than $10k in building our local #coop economy... :)
All the #cryptocurrency discourse of late has me thinking back to the early days (9/21/11) of #OWS, when I rolled into #Zuccotti with this sign and a #Bitcoin shirt...
Flash forward 6+ years. What're the most #cooperatively designed and oriented #crypto projects right now that contribute to building a financial system that works for everyone?
Can anyone recommend a good #FairCoin explainer? I recall @h had some critiques of it, but would like to wrap my arms around the underlying idea of #ProofOfCooperation a bit better, so am looking for readings/videos...
Just got off the phone with a #keepbtlocal#coop board member, and it sounds like there's serious interest in parlaying the momentum from the Telecom conversion campaign into a wireless mesh co-op #isp in town, as we have a list of several hundred supporters who could be tapped.
So, please send me relevant #meshnetworking resources to learn more!
