Anyone else use Kingdom's free tier? Presume you are not going to pony up and pay given they are obliterating it in a few days time? What alternatives are you switching out to/considering?

So using social media, I have been trolled, gaslighted, called (falsely) a sexist, a rapist, a paedo. I acknowledge that I have not had to contend with abuse anything like that other people, women included, have suffered. I would even go further and say abuse targeted at other people, particularly misogynistic, trans phobic, bigoted and racial abuse, is detrimental to us all. I think we need to stand together against those responsible for this abuse. And show solidarity to each other.

First long overdue prosecution brought under UK law specifically outlawing FGM. MGM now needs to be made illegal too.

The truth is we don't know what corpo have tried at scale because their moderation is blackbox. I don't think it is safe to make suppositions based on corpoforms. Ultimately I believe it is for the community to say how their platform works and for the community to decide what content is/isn't acceptable. So how can that be achieved whilst keeping people from harm?

    1. This isn't a mainstream social platform
    2. Any such algo/logic would be open box not black box
    3. Failsafes can be used to expose any gaming by humans
The tricky part is making it scale, but the federated nature of fosstodon will help out there

Not strictly no. Not advocating for AI here, just a simple 'N reports and a toot is scrubbed' type stuff. If the logic is simple, produced openly and open to scrutiny it could work. Needs an element of flagging to a human to highlight abuse.

Fascinating how often this thread touches on money and cost. We need to live in a society where there is no abundance, there is no wasted manufacture on things we don't need and sharing is natural. Share space. Share heat. Coordinate crops and harvests so no one starves. Share compute resources. And stop working to earn and working to provide exactly what is needed.

Discussion point: Whatever system of governance is used, there will be problems and there is no panacea. Maybe problem toots, Tooters and instances should be dealt with by algorithms triggered by reported toots, Tooters and instances. That way the whole community is trusted and takes a responsibility for the content?

Seems I have become the sinkhole for near death laptops. This one needs a battery and a fresh Windows 10 install, subject to finding firmware upgrades as its not currently compatible with the latest/greatest versions of Windows 10. With a CPU passmark of 1500, it's questionable whether it is worth fixing up as a Windows machine. And the kicker is, a trackpad button is broken. Replacement means a new palm rest. Verdict: Beyond economical repair.

It's worse than that. Break it in a cumulative security update. Fix it in a non-cumulative regular update that brings in an array of other random changes. This month's cumulative update didn't get approved as we don't take non-critical/non-security updates. WSUS is a problematic dealing with the bare essentials.

Back in '98 I started my career with an apprenticeship earning £8.5k

20 years later I see an advert for an apprentice offering £7.1k

How is this progress? It is blatant exploitation.

I hope 2019 is the year where we all collectively down tools and bring this Government to it's knees. A day of mass walkouts and mass protest is all it would take.
