This is so clever: a SCP vulnerability that uses terminal control characters to hide the names of malicious files being downloaded https://thehackernews.com/2019/01/scp-software-vulnerabilities.html

@sajith I feel like driving that cross-country would make for a great indie film...

Thinking about getting serious about store-and-forward architectures. Seems like an application area left underdeveloped since the availability of broadband in wealthy regions.
Besides being robust, they have numerous counter-surveillance advantages.

Just requiring properly configured DNS blocks a lot of spam, not because spammers can't be bothered to set up DNS, but because a lot of spam is sent through compromised hosts, which aren't likely to have DNS set up.

āRemoteā book really put this in perspective for me. Working remote isnāt a perk, it saves them money. Why should they pay you less than people who cost them more? š

@sajith right? I was in a very enthusiastic mood until I ran into that.
Not that I should let it torpedo my mood but, damn.

Yeah, I know that they are just young and ignorant, but itās depressing/exhausting that this is still a thing, especially from university educated people.

@eaon I think they are just ignorant. They both said things to confirm they donāt agree with those āopinionsā, but that people still have a right to have them without violent repercussions.
I disagree when it comes to Nazis, or anyone else who makes killing people for things they have no control over part of their āopinionā.

@jjg just like being a racist is an opinion and refusing to serve black people is OK
The people that have these ideas are people who never paid attention in history class and clearly do not read. Sadly that describes most of America now.In conversation from bikeshed.party permalink Repeated by jjg -

At 7:30AM this morning I had to overhear two young white men discuss how being a Nazi is just an opinion like refusing to make a cake for a gay couple and itās OK to peacefully protest against them but not if it gets violent.
This is why I hate coming to the office.

@wolftune @Shamar @cwebber ⦠New America fired Barry Lynn when his Open Markets criticised (New America sponsor) Google on antitrust grounds. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/01/us/politics/anne-marie-slaughter-new-america-google.html
More personally, Linda and I resigned from the Code Club board when we were told not to criticise (sponsor) Google: https://pando.com/2014/08/27/code-club-cofounder-resigns-after-being-ordered-not-to-criticize-google/
Itās all well and good to assume that these companies are benevolent and that their.m money comes without strings but itās just not true.

If you're building for people; build things that they can own, not rent.
Allow them to be nomadic with their data. Don't lock them in.
