Good news as EU formally adopts Ecodesign measures:
- As of 2021, all TVs, monitors, fridges, freezers, washing machines, washer-dryers, dishwashers and lighting products on the EU market will have to meet minimum repairability requirements - Manufacturers will have to ensure easy disassembly with commonly available tools. - Spare parts and repair information will have to be made available to professional repairers for a minimum number of years.
I was talking to @mmn two days ago about how quiet this place has been lately. No drama, no users shouting at Eugen.. Then we realized this is because Mastodon is dropping support for OStatus :]
@mirzaba No? As I have said before, the AGPL and SSPL are plenty restrictive enough for GOOG etc to avoid them. I haven't seen any license yet that can deal with the Gab problem without having unintended consequences.
On a philosophical level I think it's good that we question freedom 0, and ask ourselves whose freedoms we want to protect, and whether a new license does anything to address that. What counts as a "user" might also be good to discuss. Like, the free software movement is predicated on the users having sufficient technical know-how. Is this good or bad? Or both?
I've been cautiously optimistic about some of these new licenses, but I find myself more skeptical nowadays, for reasons that I have already written on here
@mirzaba "Cooperative Software License" was the magic words. It shows some promise, but I wonder if it won't run into the same kind of problems as CC-NC. In the CSL's case, what counts as "commercial advantage or private monetary compensation" and "on behalf of", especially when dealing with the rest of the market. It also won't stop Gab, if Gab switches to being a co-op (based on a quick skim of it because I gotta go!)
