A white whale was recently found with a strap around it. The strap had Russian markings on it and was equipped with a GoPro mount, and the whale had likely escaped from a Russian navy facility. The whale has been nicknamed Hvaldimir (Whaledimir).

Recently, a colleague at work caught it fetching a dropped phone from the sea bottom:

It was covered in the media:

We've got two Internet liberation camps who have overlapping goals, but very different methods:

    1. The Federation Camp

    2. The Blockchain Camp

If you look at what developers are experimenting with in both camps, a lot of it is basically attempts at making alternatives to Twitter, Instagram and Reddit (no one seems to want to be Facebook), with the goal of freeing Internet users from centralised funnels and cloud providers.

20 years ago: "What is a unit test?"

Now: "You don't write unit tests?!"

Me: "Did buggy software stop being a thing after unit tests were introduced? Ah, so they're not helping then..."

Electric cars and automatics drive the same way on paper. You have your D(rive), N(eutral), R(everse) and P(ark) modes and there is no clutch. That's where the similarities end, though. Electric cars, even small ones like the BMW i3, are very light on the accelerator pedal — a gentle push and you're off. Automatics, meanwhile, are incredibly sluggish. You can make it go fast, but you have to be really insistent on the accelerator pedal. Also, you don't get much braking power from the engine.

If none of the evidence Craig Wright has presented to prove that he's Satoshi Nakamoto holds up, why are so many people backing Bitcoin SV? This includes a rather intelligent colleague of mine, who is absolutely positive that Wright is the real deal.

Had a long conversation with a friend today about the future of Bitcoin. He mentioned that Bitcoin Cash, a big-blocked fork of Bitcoin, has itself been forked into Bitcoin SV, and Craig Wright, who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin, is backing it.

it's kind of sad how computing has moved towards monocultures. Even just 10 or 20 years ago, there was way more variety on operating systems, internet browsers, that kind of thing. That variety was good, it meant there were more ideas flowing around and more opportunities to develop new and interesting operating system designs. Now you basically have to choose Windows, Mac, or GNU Linux, or if you're really brave *BSD. Anything else and you will not be able to use your computer for everyday tasks

Practiced driving for 5 hours today in a Tesla Model S. Much of it was motorway driving at 110 km/h through tunnels.

Compared to the usual twisty roads and low speed limits you encounter elsewhere in Norway, motorways are like a different world. You go speed blind and cruising at high speeds becomes second nature.

Still out practice driving. Charging the Tesla. (It doesn't need a charge, but we needed a break.) The green colour is due to some kind of protection coating the owner had applied.

Every time a huge amount of collective effort is put into something that won't really help millions, such as those Thai kids who were trapped in a cave, or the spire of the Notre Dame, someone will inevitably lament that they wish such time and money was put into helping the poor or some such thing, and this will then inevitably annoy other people.

But they're right. We are simple novelty seeking creatures who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. We only care if it's placed in front of us.

Speaking of the BMW i3: Like other electric cars, it wants to go fast, and that's good, but I'm too tall for it. My right leg falls asleep because I can't extend it. I don't mind hatchbacks, but once I get my license, I'm going to stick to cars I can get into without first placing my butt on the seat and crouching.

Perks of living in Norway—country with the highest density of electric cars in the world: You sometimes practice drive in cars like the BMW i3 and the Tesla Model S because your friends and colleagues happen to own them.

the ancient romans are best known for the invention of the forum, a place where citizens could go to discuss and argue about topics of interest. modern scholars hotly debate whether the original forum was phpbb or vbulletin
