@djsundog They were just as distant from business as they were from mainstream media as well. Convergence of computing and TV was something in the distant future. We only got a glimpse of what digital media could turn into much later when CD ROMs became more common in the 90s.

When a FOSS organisation behaves the way that Mozilla did, adding insult to injury with their statement in denial, it's the job of the FOSS community to tell them they're fucking up.
Not optional, it's a duty.

If the design is proprietary, there's just no way to know what these things do with your keys.
Ideally, nothing could ever get in or out of enclaves without the keys, but this is not security through obscurity, this is worse: trusting that Intel or AMD are going to do what they say they do and nothing more. (like, not caching private keys somewhere well hidden)They've certainly earned a reputation that shouldn't be underestimated.

By the way, I used Twitter since early 2007, shortly after it launched. Not even in the early days there was anything like this on Twitter.
It was refreshing at the time, compared to the things that were available. But there never was anything like the effervescent passion for creative cross-pollination and delightfully libertine thinking that happens on Mastodon as a matter of course.Mastodon is nothing like Twitter, Mastodon is what Twitter should have been.

I like many things about Masto. But what I like most is that out-of-the-box, left-brain things happen often here. Like stumbling upon someone who understands a relatively obscure French film from 1996 based on an even more obscure 1916 French film, a guy who builds supercomputers as a hobby, a subculture that publishes poetry using the long-deceased, now-revived Gopher system.
And I could go on with the whimsical, and the unbounded creativity that emerges when the profit motive is removed. -

MeshPoint - wifi router for humanitarian crisis
Autonomous, smart, wifi mesh router which is easy to use by humanitarian NGO first responders during humanitarian or natural disasters.
[and communities being put at mercy of potentially unmerciful internet access providers]

@vertigo Now I remember, it was @Angle who showed me their graph threading Mastodon discussions view.
It has improved a lot since I first took a look many months ago, great work @Angle .

@natecull That being said, this is not specifically a Trump issue. This is a US Government issue that has been going on for the last decade at least.
SOPA, PIPA, CISPA, CISA, and other attempts of passing the same type of zombie laws were made when Trump wasn't even in the political radar.
This is the crowning achievement in demolition work of at least three or four successive administrations, and their corporate sponsors.

Consider for a moment how Internet Neutrality principles affect the value of everything if we rely on free association and intend to build a new economy based upon our own networks.
Attacks on the internet are not solely attacks on your ability to post cats online, or watch funny videos. Attacks on the internet of a digital society are effectively attacks on human rights world-wide.

What's only marginally less bad than the US electing rapists and child molesters to public office?
US people in self-congratulatory mode for not electing rapists and child molesters *this one time*.

I would like to see more documentaries about the life of female musicians. There's a few good ones like the one about Amy Winehouse, but why not other more uplifting ones?
For contrast, I watched the Andy Summers documentary, and it's a pretty good one, mostly autobiographical because he's luckily still alive.
But you never see that done for female artists, only a a sort of eulogy after Amy is dead. -

It's like people are trapped in a carousel and they can't get out of it. Circular arguments, non-sequiturs, straw man arguments, every single time, all the way down...
How did you allow them to do this to you?

It's up for vote now:

If you started a Mastodon instance early because you thought you could use that to build a prominent position to scale it and sell it to venture capitalists or plaster ads on it, you didn't quite understand how Mastodon works.
