@mattcropp @sarahjeong As a relatively isolated autistic individual, this notion of emotional labor is spot on for me. I got in when FB required .edu address. Pull for me was using it as a crutch to help reach others with similar interests whom I wouldn't otherwise have the IRL social skills to talk to.

Makes sense that people who aren't lacking in that area would likely find the labor invisible.

Crude analogy: people who don't depend on wheelchairs tend not notice when ramps are missing?

Really great piece by @sarahjeong about how #Facebook binds us through the automation of #EmotionalLabor:

"It’s hard to pin down what Facebook is because the platform replaces labor that was previously invisible. We have a hard time figuring out what Facebook actually is because we have a hard time admitting that at least part of what it supplanted is emotional labor — hard and valuable work that no one wants to admit was work to begin with."

Facebook is an emotional labor machine, and if you want to leave it, you’re going to have to start doing a lot of work

@tbeckett I think #SocialCoop being a coop, and following @mayel 's idea, can help remove at least 3 of the bullet points I listed above.

@tbeckett Most likely, most cases of coops not using .coop are due to a combination of a few of these factors.

I think @mayel 's idea about promoting .coop domains is great.

    @tbeckett
    1) They don't know that .coop domains exist. Many coops can be very tech un-savvy.

    2) Domain sellers don't promote .coop domains actively, probably because of (1), they may think it's not an attractive market.

    3) Some are afraid that they might look unprofessional when they are selling to capitalist companies.

    4) .coop domains are more expensive than other top level domains.

    5) .coop sellers are not coops themselves. Many coops have a strong preference for buying from coops

@Gin Pockets of freedom are unlikely to be evenly distributed, and re-arranging them geographically will be daunting. I think the federations will be logical more than geographical, establishing good neighbour relationships with other bridge federations that we may find disgusting at times.
Probably nothing new, it must have been more or less the same during the days of Arabic Spain, or among the many kindgoms before the unification of Italy.

@ghost i don't subscribe to the workerist ideology. Workerism is basic christianism at its root, a primitive mandate to make people work for kings and lords. It's inhuman especially now that machines can do so much of the work. It's especially inhuman when capitalists *AND* workerist workers enforce this primitive ideology on people who can't be workers. I find it immoral and disgusting, really. People who weren't afforded the same chances by biology should never be held to the same standard

The eight-hour day is an anachronism when at current levels of productivity most people should be working only three. It was an achievement more than a hundred years ago when Uruguay made it the law in 1915, but it's not a great thing to not make any progress in a hundred years.

The show must move on. #MayDay

I think it's excellent to commemorate significative events like the Haymarket Massacre on #MayDay. I also think workerism is a drag and we must learn to think beyond the industrial era that created the concept of the subordinate worker. The show must move on.

@enkiv2 @sonya The "Application" needs to die, give way to full composition.
The web had shown promise in the early days of IFRAME, but that proved to be a security nightmare, so it then regressed to centralisation and cross-domain protection.

Before that we had XPCOM, UNO, OLE/DCOM/ActiveX, NextSTEP's PDOs, but none of those things were mature enough to become ubiquitous, and the W3C increasingly seems to have become an end to a means.

Real alternatives are needed to all those.
