Executives who unscrambled sentences with economic words expressed significantly less compassion. (...) After thinking about economics, executives felt less empathy"

Just imagine what a 5yrs long economics couse does to a 20 something learning that stuff for the first time... Universities worldwide are basically sociopath factories.

    Hello world!

I joined Mastodon a while back as @michel_slm - and decided to join #socialcoop as the logical follow-up to having a decentralized, federated platform.

I've been involved in open source, especially #fedora for a while, and have been passive members of co-op businesses before but would like to be more active this time round.

Thanks to @vmatekole for fixing the technical issues that were causing a backlog for new accounts!

Keeping the other account for general toots.

@gdorn oh strange, I've installed nextcloud without troubles for https://cloudvault.me/ customers.

I would suggest you look at https://www.seafile.com/en/home/ if your goal is file storage & sync, it does client -side encryption which should be standard for such things these days.

BTW I'm surprise that Nextcloud encourages users *not* to activate even server-side encryption.

There's an ongoing discussion about our structure, whether it is time to consider incorporation or should be keep working with the current model (Open Collective + Bylaws + Loomio).

I have started a poll to help crystalise the conversation.

I do live in the European colony of Greece, which comes with its own set of bullshit. In this case though I guess I have to be grateful that the Germans (Deutsche Telekom) who acquired the former national telco at a bargain price are even bothering to slowly upgrade the infrastructure.

@ksonney I know how you feel. I've been trying for so long, even sometimes chose what neighborhood to live in based on the likelihood of getting hooked up. A few months ago my street got dug up, and I was crossing my fingers that it was for fiber... And indeed :)

There's only reason we must depend on an architecture that is financed by the entertainment and videogames industry escalating the power of the personal computer all the time whilst offering less of what the user actually needs.

The reason is that neoliberalism needs to keep building things more complex and unapproachable to protect their position, using the sacrosanct construct of "intellectual property" to defend it.

Modern software running on mainstream computing systems is insecure as fuck, wastes energy and resources, and works against the personal, social, and economic interests of most people.

It's about time we start to abandon these systems and their shackles, not just social media alone.

Eventually web browsers and mainstream PCs and mobile devices need to be seriously rethought as well.

#Cloudflare Terminates Service to Sci-Hub Domain Names

The CDN provider was compelled to take this action in response to a permanent injunction the American Chemical Society obtained late last year. While Cloudflare previously objected to a similar request, there is no sign of protest this time around.

The site is currently still available.

@dajbelshaw I used Hubzilla for quite a while, and although the fediverse which is based on OStatus/ActivityPub is a lot more popular I think that the Hubzilla zot protocol is a much better way to go in the longer term. In particular, zot has key based identity rather than domain based identity, which allows users to easily move from one instance to another or to run the same identity from multiple instances giving fault tolerance. That solves a bunch of problems which have been longstanding in the fediverse.

    I'm leading a project for Moodle: https://moodle.com/moodlenet

We're looking at ActivityPub-based open source starting points such as Mastodon and Hubzilla.

Has anyone used the latter to do anything more than experiment? I'd appreciate your comments on good/bad/ugly! https://project.hubzilla.org/page/hubzilla/hubzilla-project
