Many thanks to @mayel for providing hosting and assistance in getting set up (and for accepting #faircoin )Β and thanks to @muppeth for answering my silly questions
https://christob.al/ now runs on my own host, and builds from my self hosted Gitlab.
"To retain this status quo, ISPs have spent decades writing and buying state laws that prohibit towns and cities from exploring community owned and operated broadband networks (...) which not only hamstring municipal broadband providers, but often ban towns and cities from striking public/private partnerships."
Community owned ISPs are offering better service and lower fees? Better squash them in the name of the Holy Free Market!
Good luck! I've been in the same situation and ended up mostly freelancing rather than taking jobs. Been at it for years, it's not easy but I wouldn't trade the freedom for anything!
That sounds like an interesting project. I used d3 myself for visualising a knowledge graph on https://haha.academy/ a couple weeks ago, that was fun!
@ajroach42 Another handy service that The Internet Archive operates is purl.org, which is a free service for setting permanent URLs. If you like to host your own media, but you have to move hosts/domains sometimes, PURL is good for when you want to say, "I always want a page for my album to be available at http://purl.org/me/myalbum". Then you can move around its actual URL however much you need to.
It doesn't have to be exclusive of course, you can be rewarded simultaneously through #Ora, karma, good vibes, reputation, and yes, money. The point is to reduce the power of money in dictating our choices ("would love to work on that #FOSS project, but gotta pay the bills...")

Thanks! I'm happy to see that :) I will have to explore Taler more in depth then. It may just be a good building block for a couple project I'm working on (http://ora.network/ and http://www.creditcommons.net/)
Need a good dropbox alternative. Maybe beakerbrowser is the way to go... framadrop looks great, but there is a time limit for storage and I have not tested the sync across devices, which is crucial. (Framasoft is an amazing collection of free tools, btw.) #nodpropbox#beakerbrowser#framadrop#framasoft
Tried Jitsi for a video meeting on platform coops today. Very easy to use, free, no registration, good quality. Chat, etherpad, screen-sharing... #jitsi#noskype
Incomplete list of problems we are trying to address when we strive for #decentralisation: profiteering, exploitation, surveillance, inequality, hierarchy, intellectual property, inaccessibility, elitism, credentialism, manipulation, conformity, idiocracy, etc...
Or simply put, power and capital.
Annoyingly some restrict their meaning of #centralisation to "I want me some of that too!" (eg. a lot of the blockchain people these days)
