@switchingsocial hey, have you checked out #rustodon? it's trying to fulfill some of the same usecases as mastodon and pleroma, but is geared towards small instances (ie, you can run it on a raspberry pi) and small clients (the default webclient doesn't even need JS!)
we're also looking deeply into correctness issues around federation and privacy, and how we can give users more fine-grained control over what they see without a massively complicated UI.

full disclosure: i am the lead developer (ᵔ.ᵔ;)

Hi, anyone interested in working on a federated alternative to TripAdvisor (traveler and tourism information, reviews, chat, travel album, ...) ?

“People are not rewarded for checking previous work,” Schatzberg said. “They’re rewarded for coming up with sexy new research findings. That’s true in the sciences, but it’s also true in the humanities.”

there's amazing work being done in exposing and critiquing technology and its intersection with society, politics, economics, environmental impact etc.. but the subset of it done by women, and with an explicit feminist decolonial approach? that's the very best

@algernon One of the problems I have with this approach (I'm not an Electron developer) is that while Electron may be easy for the developer it's not necessarily easy for the user. In terms of running with older hardware and limited system resources. In terms of security (massive attack surface of a browser, vs much smaller for a native app) and maintainability (what version of browser is this Electron app based on, and can that be updated?). In doing the thing which is quick for the developer you may just be shifting problems elsewhere. -

@deadsuperhero agreed strongly. I really wish groups would ship somewhere besides GNU Social (I dislike its interface), because I feel like they have so many use-cases

GraphQL. If you're doing webdev or apps, check it out. It may not kill REST like some are claiming, but it is an awesome timesaver when developing client applications.
Not just while coding, but also communicating with backend developers.

I'm searching around for open source / free software backlog systems. I prefer something simple and don't care about scrum features. A plain kanban view would be nice. Suggestions welcome!

People are asking me to implement webmentions, and since I don't have a strong opinion on it (it would not be hard to implement), here's another poll: https://www.strawpoll.me/15428538
Webmentions are like blog pingbacks, essentially, if you remember those.

Publics On Site Syndicate Elsewhere
POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, a content publishing model that starts with posting content on your own domain first, then syndicating out copies to 3rd party services with permashortlinks back to the original on your site.
It's a key part of why and how the IndieWeb movement is different from just monoculture solutions.

If you're interested in #ActivityPub and #Federation, technically speaking, you'll probably want to have a read at our documentation on the subject.
If you want to drop a review and help to improve it, your feedback is welcome on https://code.eliotberriot.com/funkwhale/funkwhale/merge_requests/435
