Facebook is a uniquely horrible creature.

Birthed as Ivy League frat house wet dream.

Coddled on narcissist need to always exist (be seen/be heard).

Juiced on the frictions of rubbing together ever available ideology divides until they bleed.

All the while gorging on copious amounts of free content and data until it enveloped the world.

There is no better version of this.

Only better places to spend our time and energy.

Where hopefully we can become better people.

@gc I haven't had a desktop computer since the early 2000s, some of us are nomadic and only hoping from wi-fi hotspot to 4g tether on a laptop. Servers do have some advantages, in terms of always-on availability and bandwith. They also don't have to be expensive.

datacenters do not imbue computers with special powers. if you own a desktop less than a decade old, congrats! you already own a server more than capable of hosting any/all of these:

The impending sale of GitHub to Microsoft is another example of what happens when we fixate on #opensource IP but not equitable corporate ownership models. How *should* the repository of most free, open software projects be owned?

"I can't convince my friends to come to #mastodon because it is too complicated to set up!"

    And

"We need a decentralized federated #Facebook #twitter replacement!"

2 different issues. We don't need something at the scale of Facebook. Mastodon and federation work because it is people coming together in instances that connect to other communities, think neighborhoods to cities to provinces. It took a long time to build these nations, give Masto time to create more shared interest instances.

    Remember

Not everyone can self host software systems.

Not everyone wants to self host software systems.

Not everyone gives a shit about tech

Most people just want to go online, do their thing and move on with their day

If there is a mass exodus from GitHub / GitLab or others we people hosting our own infra need to be good about discovery, community building, community engagement and more.

We also need to figure out how to federate authn/authz. I'll skip over submitting small things if it means yet another account on yet another server run by yet another random.

Centralization isn't great but it does facilitate discovery, community and engagement.

We need to keep this at the back of our mind.

@kensanata There's decentralized systems like IPFS, BitTorrent, Zeronet et al. make replication of content easy, as in when you visit content you also help host it. No solution is 100% permanent, look at historical examples. But the more something is replicated the better it has a chance of standing the test of time; Epic of Gilgamesh, Shakespeare, Sanskrit scriptures and so on.

If you want your content to last, release it under a free license, back it up using free formats, or write it down.

@kensanata This is a good point - you pay X per month for a VPS to self-host stuff and that's fine when you're around and solvent to pay that.

But what if you disappear, or your financial situation changes to the point where you can no longer afford a VPS? It all goes down.

We tell each other to self host in order to escape the big corps. But when we die, all the self hosted stuff is going to get wiped and history will only remember the archives that got stored by the big corps. And you know how history is written by the winners. Do we need a way to automatically hand over our sites to archive.org or similar? Or send them disc images? Nobody expects to get run over by a car but some of us will, today. I made no plans for this.

Medieval peasants lived grueling, terrible lives. But their vacation days beat out the policies now common even in progressive societies.
