CrossFit Shutters Facebook, Instagram Accounts Amid Data Privacy Concerns
By Justin LoFranco from Morning Chalk Up
CrossFit’s decision Monday to deactivate all Facebook and Instagram pages indefinitely was fueled by growing data and privacy concerns with the social media giant, Greg Glassman revealed on a call with the Morning Chalk Up.  CrossFit staff has been silent on the changes amid large speculation in the community about what is actually going on. …

so recently github announced their own package registry, and today they announced their own opencollective type of thing. i think at this point it's safe to say microsoft is using github to try to take over the open source software world. (it was safe to say this when they acquired github, it's just very obvious now.)

That's the bad news. The #GoodNews in federated networking land is that there are way more federated social web projects than there were a year ago, covering a much wider range of use cases (video, events etc). Also, we have a much greater understanding of the issues that are blocking universal inter-operation (portable identity, privacy and encryption, lack of standardized extensions, lack of implementation docs), and projects like #Spritely actively working on demonstrating ways to solve them.

What might a future without the big #platforms look like? How can we combine cheap computing like @Raspberry_Pi with new protocols like @dat_project, @IPFSbot, ActivityPub, and Secure Scuttlebutt to build #decentralized portable servers?

      A Revolution In Your Pocket
from Think Deeply and Rebuild Things
Internet users have been trained over the past decade or so to believe the argument that the services we have grown to think of as “the internet” are expensive to run and that the only way to pay for those services is to let ourselves be tracked everywhere in the service of advertising. Our concepts of privacy, particularly when we talk about laws and regulations, are often presumed to take place solely within this frame.

"Not everyone can fight, or risk getting arrested, consider accessibility in activism" is very true.

BUT not a good reason to choose reformist movements if you prefer to do revolutionary work.

There are many many accessible ways to be part of and support radical work.

Be on the legal team, hand out the coffee, give encryption workshops, organize fundraisers.
If you can never leave your house, stop doing pointless petitions and start writing to prisoners. Very important revolutionary work.

Tech-centric approaches without planning for its impact on people will fail to deliver a project that serves people.

People-centric design without good tech foundations will fail to be able to build something that meets its own goals.

There's no succeeding while prioritizing one over the other. To build the right systems we need to intertwine the work of both.

You don't have to use Google Play on your Android phone.

There's a free open alternative app store called F-Droid, which is much more privacy-friendly, and which you can install yourself relatively easily.

There's a simple instruction guide for beginners on switching.social:

There's a much more detailed guide by @IzzyOnDroid here:

You can follow the official F-Droid account here:

Introducing Indie Web Server 8.0.0: install the server and start serving a secure static personal web site in literally seconds

Video demo + short post: https://ar.al/2019/04/16/set-up-a-live-static-personal-web-site-in-seconds-with-indie-web-server-8.0.0/

I hope it makes your lives easier. This is one of the earlier pieces of the puzzle in the Hypha project.

(It took two weeks and a couple of false starts but Version 8.0.0 introduces native binaries for Linux and macOS. Production use via startup daemons is supported only on Linux platforms with systemd.)
