Because writing (and a great many other things) organize themselves in a hierarchy, we don’t have movements, quite. We have Great Men who take credit for movements. We have a bunch of people all working along the same lines, and one or two after the fact get to typify, monetize, BE the movement. Money flows to and from them, press is about them. We have no idea how to talk about or trace the taxonomy of a movement without Great Men.
some of the new folks seem to not be getting this, so here goes.
twitter has social currency, masto has social currency as well.
twitter social currency rules:
- amass followers - defend your territory - demolish your opponents
masto social currency rules:
- share your life - be yourself - help others
as with anything, there's ways the latter's rules can be taken advantage of, but if you're thinking you can swap out one for the other, you're reading things wrong.
@axolotl especially during 2016, when it was really fucking hard to bridge build, in order to have a discussion about how being ethically opposed to voting is a valid stance *and* the severity of the situation. it was an opportunity to discuss diversity of tactics and having an agreed-upon strategy, but instead, he just came off like a half-baked sellout with tenure
@axolotl i think i recall us talking about his being so heavily emphaized in linguistics, not sure about the rest of it. i started tuning out when he went from pointing out that voting can be a reasonable compromise given outcomes (especially in the u.s.) to sound patrician and whiny about it, which if nothing else, is a good way to get people to not take anything else he says seriously (including myself). white anarchy grandpa isn't a good look or a good take
Hey #PDX folks, I've got a couch that's gonna be available on the first of December in SE Portland if you know of anyone looking for a place to be. It's me n another trans girl, trying to keep a quiet and just, drama free household once we ditch the cis boy living here now.
Anyway, DM me for details, or boost pls to raise the awareness. 💖
For people working on ActivityPub implementations I just wrapped up a nice chat with the folks of https://homebrewserver.club in Amsterdam (@manetta@rra and others). It was all via document editing and you can read the whole thing starting at line 188 in this document
It's a bit disorganized and I think they are going to digest it into a blog post or similar but for now this may be helpful to people who are puzzling their way through ActivityPub implementation!
I reject this idea that BIPOC should be held up to impossible standards of social justice perfection. As with all things, we should remain critical and inquisitive of our behavior and interpersonal reactions, but to expect BIPOC or disabled folks to have zero room for growth opportunities or imperfections is just not realistic.
@frickhaditcoming@a_breakin_glass yeah, that's what i figured. he's equating "ho ho, this'll get 'em!" with outcomes. um, my survival isn't really being helped by "gay marriage is an anti-fundamentalist prank, hilarious" here, one, and two: what, are you kidding me?
also, -20 (at least) for conceptualizing fundmentalism on a single axis, regardless of context or intersecting issues/conditions
@frickhaditcoming and, i mean...it's like i can see the logic of that, but the problem is that virtually nothing in that problem set works like that. it's like he grabs liberal talking points and goes off on some "oh damn, please stop talking" tangent.
i can be the queen of tangents, so in that way it's relatable. but concept -> outcome, sort of important tbh, as is "ok, my actual point here is this, apologies" or the like.
@frickhaditcoming i managed to avoid him for years, but seeing his eugencist and pedophilic takes were like "should i close the browser or throw the laptop out the window".
