@polymerwitch *nods* also, it's not like the software industry doesn't have tiered pricing these days, it's just in the user -> company direction in terms of expenses.
if Unity can release free to download software with an annual revenue cap, there's no way that can't go in the opposite direction when it comes to someone's licensed work
@polymerwitch right! it's a different context and scope, but the overarching pattern is the same
seriously, i blame GNU licensing for part of this. the idea that all commerical interests are valid as long as they adhere to a set of rules...they'll figure out ways around it, or if it's determined to be a viable risk, lawyer up and do it anyway, blatantly
the difference between an individual artist repurposing a (cc)'d work, then putting it up on Bandcamp or Soundcloud (or Scribd, etc.), and a corporation just "for exposure"ing someone's work without permission, is pretty huge
@polymerwitch I ran into this the other day as well. I really detest the idea that FOSS-like licensing (or public domain and the like) are the *only* free licensing formats available.
um, i'm opposing capitalists because i don't want corporations walking off with my work, in whichever way. i don't care if someone repurposes it for their own work, that's different (for me).
"… on average, when Craigslist’s opened erotic services in a city, the female homicide rate went down 17 percent. 17 percent. That’s not the homicide rate for female sex workers. That’s the homicide rate for all women."
"Another study found when Rhode Island accidentally decriminalised indoor prostitution from 2003–2009, they found a 31% decline in reported rapes and a similar decline in gonorrhea cases."
"We're building a means to allow everybody to write symphonies! No more years of university or private study, no more complicated software that never quite works. The power is in your hands! :D"
Anyway, yeah. The thing that's grossest about it is how passive it is. You can franchise a self-storage place and do basically nothing and just skim that profit off of the high housing costs of your city. And if, like here, you build it in a place where land values are mid-high and only getting higher, when you're done in a decade, the demo is cheap and you make a killing on the land sale.
Forcing everyone around me to learn sign is not working as a solution, and forcing myself to speak is an extremely difficult task.
Several weeks ago I managed to say, "Hi." to a person very close to me, and that in if itself was incredibly strenuous. At this point I WANT to talk, but translating that into the mechanical action just doesn't happen with out expending so much mental energy that I'm wrecked for hours or days afterward.
i think in a way, Battlestar Galactica sort of tainted the "hopeful media" space, especially for TV. If we're including horror, TWD too. Bring back TNG approaches.
Even Firefly approaches would be better tbh. (I love Firefly, but it's half-hopeful, half-apocalyptic fwiw)
further, as best i know, there's zero regulation of it, so they can (and will) just raise the rent out of nowhere.
wait, there's more! it also cashes in on highly unstable cost of living baselines. rent goes up, move to smaller place or shared housing? storage space. not sure if/when you may need to move? storage space. and ofc, "get forced out because of gentrification...storage space. if you can afford it. if not, *sells everything remotely excess*
@benhamill "hey, have you heard about the <robot voice> tiny little overpriced room that can upend your entire life? small transitory needs, large ones, not enough space, too much stuff? we've got your covered. *completely covered* evil laughter"
@benhamill *agreed*. it's not as gross as being gentrified out of your ~ entire damn life ~, but on a "pound for pound" basis, so to speak? oh yeah. it's predatory.
There are visually impaired users floating about the federverse and they deserve descriptions.
A simple description of "airplane" or "cute Kitty" is sufficient. You can do more if you like, but at least add a succinct, basic description if possible.
