New computer naming scheme:
Use a first or last name from a Democrat currently running for President of the USA in 2020.
(Good news! You probably don't have to do anything! There's a 99.8% chance your computer's name is coincidentally already shared with one of the candidates!)

@claudiom: I came across something which drastically sped up fingerprint unlocking again on my #OnePlus #6T: clearing the cache of "Ambient Display".
It's under system settings > apps > all apps > menu in the top right, show system apps > ambient display > clear cache.
Via: https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/cbib62/_/
I didn't believe it would work, but it did. And it worked really well. Unlocking speed is like new again, and I didn't have to retrain fingerprints for it. Yay!

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.
This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.
I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

If you're still using any flavour of Chromium (Chrome, Brave, MS Edge,...), please do consider switching to a Gecko browser. Google abusing its monopoly to disable ad blocking is just the beginning, they'll try turning the internet in a gated Google services network as long as we let them

Choosing words to use and words to avoid is not about "politics", "policing", or "censorship".
Word usage should be about making people feel welcome and accepted. It's all about respecting what people want to be called (and not be called).

I brought up GIMP's name being a problem a few times in years past (on IRC and even in person), but, after getting pushback, and because I needed to use GIMP professionally, I guess I held my nose and used it anyway.
I'm happy people are brining it up again now. I'm sad the response from Mitch is still the same.
Instead: They *could* agree that it's not appropriate and state they're considering a new name for the upcoming 3.0 release (which includes the GTK3 port).

Even with a temporary limp from time to time (and sometimes even on crutches), you really see how cruel people can be, including name calling, shoving, blocking doorways, refusing to give up seats, etc.
I wish people went out of their way to help others in general, and that would include not accidentally name calling or reminding them of times when they've been harassed.
Even so, it doesn't take personal experience at all to understand this, but personal experience does highlight issues.

I couldn't visit LGM this year (which includes the GIMP developers) because I severely sprained my ankle and have been limping for months now. Ironic, I guess?
Previously, I was at a GUADEC (in Manchester) where I had some issues walking and was harassed by a bunch of drunk Brits who called me a "gimp" among other things. š
I've used the software since 1996, despite the problematic name, but thoroughly wish they'd change it. (I have for decades, but even moreso as years have gone on.)

Should we be strict about the use of non-free tools in the free/libre ecosystem? Today was the second time the question popped up in the last couple of months. I don't have much of an analysis for you, just an old-fashioned opinionated editorial :)

@prokoudine (And personally, I used Lightroom for *far too long* before finally switching to darktable. But that was just on my own for personal stuff. Although I liberally licensed several photos for use in FOSS during that time. So it kind of counts?)

@prokoudine I've been on both side of this debate at different times:
- having to use Illustrator years ago when Inkscape didn't exist
- used InDesign when Scribus didn't exist (thankfully I don't do print layouts anymore)
- using Inkscape and having to deal with AI files from others
- working on a team where we _only_ use Inkscape with share repos of files (it's so nice to use one FOSS tool together)

@prokoudine IMO: Be strict about open file formats (make sure there's an open interchange format ā even if it's side-by-side with a native format), but not be strict about the tool being FOSS.
Greatly encourage FOSS tooling whenever possible ā but it's better to get contributions than not, even if it means proprietary tooling.
The closer it comes to a critical workflow, the more FOSS it should be, however.
Mockups made in Illustrator? Not vital to the software. Presentations? Also not vital.

@federicomena @brainblasted @cassidyjames A new name for GIMP could be GIMLI:
"GNU Image Manipulation, Lines Included"
This references an age old issue, where a lot of people weren't aware that you can draw lines by holding shift to draw from one point to another.
There was even a tutorial made for this: https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Straight_Line/
