@uranther @kinsey @sireebob @dogoken In remote regions of the world, Internet traffic does, indeed, travel by foot. People have bus routes, and they equip the buses with wifi routers. Remote towns accumulate packets until a bus w/ wifi arrives, and offloads traffic at that time.
You need specialized client software to make this work (more like BBSes or UUCP back in the day), but apparently folks do use it today. I hadn't known.

What an odd morning. A few things:
- As a reminder, users on an instance don't represent the beliefs of the owner/admins of that instance.
- If you're new to Mastodon, understand that people generally aren't here to argue and may not receive it well (even if you don't see it as actually arguing).
- It's always cool to listen a little bit to get a feel for a new place before jumping in.
- That said, it shows grace and self-awareness to say "this isn't for me" and leave for other pastures.

@josemurilo By using & supporting Google Maps we're literally letting Google own the planet. Support open projects like OpenStreetMap instead.

Hello World !
I read again about Mastodon in theoutline.com and figured it was time to give it a shot!
I'm a PhD student in computer vision, working in the Vision for robotics groups at TU Wien. So yeah, I spend my day with robots 🤖
And when I'm not, I'm usually either trying to learn German, or trying to learn how to play the bass !
I've never been big on Twitter, so we'll see where this goes!

Most tooters I see here are 'puter tutors who tutor 'puters to 'pute. If you tutor 'puters to 'pute, that's great, but is tutoring 'puters to 'pute going to be all that you toot?

I need to find a solution with the online translation. It seems Mastalab will reach the 10M chars/month allowed by the Yandex API. The obfuscation allows to reduce the number of chars sent to the API but it's not enough. Any ideas/solutions would be appreciated.

@jamey @garbados @abreakinglass It uses batman-adv. That's mainly just because it's packaged in Debian and easy to enable. -

@vertigo 5um is probably doable in a home lab, given expertise and some fun equipment
people've done some pretty great stuff with lithography exposures using tiny DLP projectors -

We generally think of the interface between RAM and everywhere else as a security boundary.
RAM is generally totally trusted.
Databases, a little trusted.
Filesystems, a little less so.
Network packets, totally untrusted.Note: these trust levels pretty much are completely destroyed by Cloud-hosted compute servers. Cloud RAM should now be 'utterly untrusted'; it lives in the Network, not in Your Data Center.
We have not come anywhere near grasping the implications of this. This will bite us.
