Lately it seems at least 75% of my emails to #gmail accounts go mysteriously missing. I don't know if they aren't arriving at all, or if they're just going straight to spam, or what, but gmail obviously doesn't like the address I'm sending from.

Aside from being annoying, this is a good demonstration of how centralised services are problematic. If 8 out of 10 people I email are all using gmail, and gmail mistreats my messages, then their error becomes the expected [de facto "correct"] norm.

"CHRONICLES & COMMONS" #0x13, with Brent Newhall as guest.

I just finished listening to this episode. Excellent interview, and quite inspiring!

Brent is a funny, creative, prolific guy, with a unique vision. (And the overview of planes-walking rangers at the end of the episode is worth your time, all on its own!)

Check out ixsystems for support plans. (That said, I recommend NetBSD over any other BSD for its sane defaults, pkgsrc, and especially FFS. But, then, I don't admin it in production, i'm just a user. )

@lostnbronx You've probably been here, but I find http://dig.ccmixter.org/film?lic=open to be a pretty nicely-focused collection of #creativecommons tunes.

Granted, there are only about 127 to choose from given what you need it for, but I thought I'd mention it.

Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.

A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."

People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.

Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.

@archer72 Nice! and you're using Rox Term. Interesting choice. Is there some killer feature to it? I've been using rxvt-unicode lately because it has some nice perl extensions or something that make it fun to use, but we have an open relationship.

@mairin That sounds amazing. I have no experience with BCI so I don't know of any software sitting between 3d control and BCI input. I imagine some relatively simple Python API could be used to bridge the two together, but I don't know anything about it, personally.

What 3d application specifically are you looking to control? A game? Blender? VR? something else?

I needed to create an online survey for work and wanted to default to something open source rather than falling back on, say, google forms.

Your article https://opensource.com/article/17/2/tools-online-surveys-polls pointed me to TellForm, so thank you.

    I can think of two.

    1) camera tracking with OpenCV. This is actually pretty common and there are implementations like https://github.com/kylemcdonald/FaceTracker lying around. We experimenting a lot with this stuff at Weta although it was very much in r&d rather than in production.

    2) accelerometer, like https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/sensors/sensors_motion.html

You didn't ask me but it's always interesting to compare notes.

    CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-core
    GPU: Nvidia GT 630
    RAM: 24GB
    HD: 16GB SSD + 2 TB HD

Main driver is Kdenlive, but I bring out Flowblade for quick edits. For audio tracks, I primarily use Qtractor + Audacity. I don't do much compositing, but when I do, I also use Natron (used to be Blender, but I don't do 3d stuff, so Natron makes more sense).
