@adasauce@sconlan So I've been reading up a bit more on the Mark II and it was originally supposed to be available to Kickstarter backers in Dec. 2018. We're not in Jan. 2020 and the official website just says you can reserve a unit for a $1 deposit. Mass production starts "in late 2019 or early 2020."
So...I guess they're technically not behind schedule yet.
@adasauce@sconlan I know that it exists and I think they're working on their second-gen device. I don't know a lot about the details, though. Open-sourcing the digital assistant concept seems worthwhile, at the very least.
@falgsc Pretty sure the original tweet is a joke, but the fact that it's believable says a lot about Musk and all these people "disrupting" industries by basically inventing things that already exist and then sticking an app in them.
@sconlan Of course, many of us already have phones that are always listening to us, so avoiding the digital assistant on the kitchen counter is purely psychological.
@sconlan Yeah, if I was ever to get one, I'd at least keep it out of the bedroom.
I'd also consider buying one of the 3rd party "mute" devices. I can't find it now, but there is (used to be?) a thing that sits on top and plugs white noise into the Echo/Google Home, but stops doing so when you say it's own hot word (and it's not internet connected, so not spying even though it is, itself, always listening).
I saw a news article yesterday called "How to keep you new home assistant devices from eavesdropping on you." I didn't read it, since I don't have one of those things, but I assume the only certain way is to never turn it on in the first place, and return it to the store if you were given one as a gift.
@carcinopithecus I'm not surprised the author would write something like this. I'm surprised Maclean's would publish it. They have been running more explicitly left-wing opinion columns for the last little while, probably token pieces in the name of "balance," but nothing as explicitly anti-capitalist as this, as far as I can remember.
periodic reminder: The Luddites were not against technology. What they were against was being automated out of their good-paying jobs that enabled them to have lives. That is why they smashed machines.
I reinstalled MyFitnessPal on my phone tonight. I have been very unhealthy and unhappy with my weight and body composition for a while. At first, it was depression. Then it just became easier to continue the bad habits that formed from the depression.
So, I figured I might as well be a cliché and use the New Year as an excuse to start getting healthier.
I don't really like this app, but none of the open source options come close for the functionality I want.
I'm super excited that Peertube's supported now, because people downloading the app because they want a YouTube app will now be presented with an alternative video sharing platform. It's like a reverse Trojan horse, like if the horse opened to reveal a bunch of anarchists who came out and played some music and fed everybody a meal, instead of all the fighting.
@keithzg Hmm. Looks like I might just have a shitty aux cable. It's only got one ring, so it's probably only picking up one side with partially inserted and the other when fully inserted. (Oh, yeah, it turns out it wasn't actually getting both sides when loose, it just sounded richer because the side it picked up that way tended to have more bass and mid-range.)
Follow-up: it was the right side that wasn't coming through. I've got it coming in now by fiddling with the aux input cord. Strangely, if I insert it fully, I only get the left side. Inserting it loosely, I get both sides. This isn't the first time I've had this issue. My laptop is the same way. Any audio experts know why this would be the case?
