When a lot of queer and trans people shifted here back in August 2018 from Twitter, i commented that this was probably the first public social network that had this amount of trans people discussing things openly and safely alongside cis people and how groundbreaking that was in terms of normalising our experiences for all involved.

I still think this is the case today, which is why i feel its important we need to all collectively try our best to steer things here towards the positive.

So, uh, how can I make January seem bright and festive...or at least less oppressive? I'm not even the kind of person who hates winter, but January is always a particularly hard month for me (SAD, maybe?).

Not drinking seems to be helping, though. I feel less exhausted all the time. #DryJanuary is doing me good.

@sanspoint To be fair, Orthodox Christmas was only yesterday. But the Christmas music should *definitely* stop as of today, IMO.

Christmas and that whole holiday season is great because it makes winter brighter, more festive and generally more bearable.

The problem is that it's really just at the start of the hardest part of winter. Jan/Feb is when it gets really cold AF outside. And, for some reason, even though winter solstice has already passed, it seems like the days are actually SHORTER (like, it's still dark when I leave for work, which wasn't the case before the holidays).

@FssOfDeath @ThatGeoGuy It didn't help that it wasn't initially obvious that the ANSI models would ship in January, rather than the mid-December date they kept mentioning (which, apparently, applied only to ISO models).

@ThatGeoGuy Yeah, the lack of communication once an order has been placed isn't great. They're communicating on the forum, which is good, but an update email directly to people waiting for a shipping notice wouldn't hurt.

Looks like ANSI #pinebookpro orders will ship in a few days. Hopefully, I'll receive mine by mid-month and can start fooling around with it.

Also in my feed this week, for some reason, is an orchestral arrangement of "Happy Birthday To You."

The spotify algorithm that creates the "discover weekly" mixes is...not great. A week into January and it's still full of Christmas music, because that's a lot of what I was listening to in December. I don't need to "discover" new Christmas music in January, thanksverymuchspotify.

people were talking about the millennium bug recently, well it turns out a lot of the fixes just delayed the problem to 2020

"Programmers wanting to avoid the Y2K bug had two broad options: entirely rewrite their code, or adopt a quick fix called “windowing”, which would treat all dates from 00 to 20, as from the 2000s, rather than the 1900s. An estimated 80 per cent of computers fixed in 1999 used the quicker, cheaper option."

"Those systems that used the quick fix have now reached the end of that window, and have rolled back to 1920. Utility company bills have reportedly been produced with the erroneous date 1920, while tens of thousands of parking meters in New York City have declined credit card transactions because of the date glitch."

here's the thing about telling people to CW things:
    1. CWs literally, logically cannot be a one-size-fits-all, universal norm. Humans are not limited to needing warnings for "predictable" subjects, or any small/reasonable set of things, at all. any aspect of a traumatic memory can become retraumatizing; my go-to example is someone who pointed out they're triggered by schoolbuses. should everyone, everywhere CW photos of schoolbuses? I don't think so! it's impractical, and how are the vast majority of people supposed to figure out that's a thing?

But if someone in your circles asks you to CW schoolbuses, you can certainly CW schoolbuses. CW conventions CAN be effective when tailored for the needs of a specific community, but this means CW conventions Need to be different between different groups. why?

    2. Attempts to be exhaustive about CWs aren't just logically doomed to fail, they're inaccessible.
    a. If the rate of CWs is too high, people's ability to make decisions gets overloaded.

I mostly don't think individual consumer action makes much difference in hellworld, but I do go out of my way to try and avoid giving any money to Nestle, simply because I feel like they're on a whole other level of evil. I don't always succeed at this, but I try.

@Canageek The few examples given in the linked article make me question the entire premise (that codpieces are coming back in style), but the benefit to transmasc people is one I hadn't considered and now I hope they actually do come back in style.
