@snowdusk_ Oh! I have just been corrected! Apparently my information is out of date, in 2014 The Body Shop withdrew all their products from China and now they genuinely are considered a cruelty free brand. Sorry to have mislead you!

@snowdusk_ Hahaha, you're welcome. My wife is really into cruelty-free health and beauty products so I know a lot about this kind of thing. All the companies who are really serious about it don't sell in China. If three are particular kinds of product you want recommendations for, let me know and I can ask her!

@snowdusk_ Sorry to disappoint you, snowdusk, but The Body Shop sell their products in China, and any company which sells cosmetics in China is required by Chinese law to test on animals. So while they may support ending animal testing in Canada (and maybe they really do!), when push comes to shove and they have to choose between animal testing or losing out on money from the Chinese market, they choose the money. :(

@leeb@mastodon.technology @Greg If your username was `leeb`, then it seems the shell account was removed, `uinfo leeb` returns `no such user`.

I didn't realise that had happened to anybody! That's far, far worse than a Mastodon ban. I'm really surprised. I have done *plenty* of civil complaining about the sorry state of SDF on BBOARD in my time, all that ever happened was I completely ignored. To lose your shell access over a toot is insane.

@snowdusk_ @Greg I don't think so. I haven't bothered because I don't expect anything to be achieved via BBOARD. Look how well it works when there are problems with Gopher or VOIP. The most likely outcome is that somebody would decide to make fun of me in HURTDESK.

@Greg No, as far as I know it's strictly their Mastodon accounts. One of the affected members is even still an aNONradio DJ.

The admin(s) of SDF's Mastodon instance have recently been banning the accounts of people making critical, but civil, comments about SDF.

This is totally unacceptable and deeply disappointing.

But, the good news is that federated protocols make it very easy to walk away from this kind of nonsense without losing contact with people.

@cdmnky Tbh, I really just want bog standard SMTP/IMAP/POP mail with good SSL certs, for less money than spinning up my own very low-spec VPS, from somewhere that isn't going to do any datamining on my emails, is not likely to disappear without a trace in the near future, and preferably isn't explicitly branded with some sort of radical politics.

@cdmnky Thanks for this! I should have done some more careful research of my own first, they actually sound very weird and non-standard, and them having some private key I can't access is pretty much a dealbreaker.

Anybody want to share some firsthand experience, or well-considered opinions of, ProtonMail?
