Shared blacklists on Twitter are a *user* choice though. And yes Twitter can throw your friend off for behaving badly, but it's extremely unlikely your friend will get thrown off Twitter because a username next to him in the database is behaving badly and a Twitter admin is like "I'll just ban this block of 1200 people from talking to that block of 1700 people".

I feel bad about the lies but what else can you do? At least your data isn't being packaged and sold to algorithms that are going to target you with political scare ads and subprime loans. That's gotta count for something

The other lie I tell my friends is "It's like email, you can talk to your friends no matter what instance you choose!"

I just don't feel like explaining masto project drama and shared blacklists on github and how if you choose wrong an admin spat can cut you or your friends off at any time.
