Shit. I think I know why social networks (including Mastodon) don't foster personal connection: There isn't a shared activity to bond over. No one is doing anything together. It's just people thinking out loud.

Even the special interest instances on this network don't really facilitate that, because they are too meta and only talk about a specific interest without facilitating the shared participation in said activity.

That's what made my old site ArtGrounds work. You could draw there.

A lot of the existing how to use Mastodon documents seem to be rather technical, or spend more time talking about the advantages of Mastodon than being a straight how to. I was thinking of dusting off my old blog and writing up a very simple clear how Mastodon Works document and recording a YouTube version for people who would prefer to get their information through video. please send me suggestions as to what I should make sure to include.

Related to this, I want to put in details of how instance blocking and lack of federation work.

Important questions that I don't know the answer to. assume in all of these that I am on instance A and instance be has been blocked by instance A:
1) Can I still follow someone on instance B?

2) will I see a message from a user on instance if they @ me?

3) what happens if I am following someone on instance B when it is blocked?
