@why @applejack @nosleep Do they have to? The frontier is being moved, but there is still a frontier. You mentionned photography earlier, I'm sure many artists, particularly those whose main output was making realistic portraits, considered photography to be a similar threat. And in the overlap period apparently some artists did cheat by tracing over photographs, which if done insincerely does diminish their art.

But in the end, photography didn't cause the death of visual arts, there's still people impressed by handmade portraits, due to the difficulty of it compared to just snapping a picture, and photography's contribution to art didn't result in the art scene losing its soul. After all, look at these photographs of flowers that make you think of penises.

@a_breakin_glass @vriska @why I think the point Vriska is making is that even if you have intent, if you use the AI to substitute for a lack of vision (as opposed to a lack of technical means to achieve the vision), your claim to the art is diminished, perhaps even entirely eliminated.

For instance, if you wrote a prompt for AI to make a painting of Goku's assermentation ceremony in the style of romantic realism, and it makes you a modernist painting, and you don't know enough to distinguish the two, you would have a hard time convincing me that the result represents your intent and that you have much if any artistic claim to the resulting image.

    Well, ideally, meddling producers aside.

@vriska @why I'm not sure about that. I think the distinction here is who has control over the creative process. If the person telling you to write the book is also a micromanaging editor to the point where the book ends up representing their vision more than yours, there's a case to make that they are at least as much of the artist as you are. It's why I consider directors to be the ultimate "artists" of a film or game; they are the ones who make the call and ultimately decide if some of the art done by people working under them fits the vision or not.

In the same way, if someone intentionally works the prompts of the AI bot to get a result that represents what they had in mind, I think they have the same kind of claim to the piece.

@vriska @why Meaning for the beholder is a red herring, art requires intent; if you intended self-expression, then you made art. There is an unbroken line between a child grabbing a box of crayons and scribbling on a piece of cardboard and a painter painting a celebrated masterpiece, nothing happens between the two that changes the nature of the act being done, only its refinement. Computers are for now, as far as we know, incapable of intent. No matter how much they refine the process, if they didn't start with intent, they cannot produce the most basic art.

On the other hand, artists could use AI as a tool to craft art. Although the standard to which such art would be held when it comes to refinement should take that tool's capabilities into consideration.

The manual for the game is fascinating though, it has long sections about modern (well, for the late 80s) attack submarine tactics.

Fun facts, I think it might be the oldest Tom Clancy game. And it's made by Sid Meier.

Result of my "random ship, random engagement" game:

Engaged in a Sturgeon-class Nuclear Attack Submarine with a ASW group consisting of 1 x Kiev-class Tactical Aviation Carrying Cruiser, 2 x Udaloy-class Large Anti Submarine Ships, 1 x Victor III-class Nuclear Attack Submarine. First was a contact on my towed array, identified to be Kiev-class, tried to intercept its course, once identification was positive, launched a Tomahawk in its direction. Seconds after launch, my sonarman identified the unmistakable sound of torpedo launch up my ass. Pass the activation point, the Tomahawk homed in on a target, and sank an Udaloy-class ship, likely an escort of my target. Launched a second Tomahawk in the same vicinity where the Kiev-class contact was, then started evasive maneuvers, sharp course changes perpendicular to the torpedo's course, decoys, noisemakers. Narrowly avoided getting hit, launched a Mk 48 torpedo in the direction of the convoy as well, as no hit had been registered at that point yet, but shortly after launching the torpedo, the Tomahawk hit the target Kiev-class and sunk it. Multiple torpedo launches were registered and I immediately ordered a dive to 300 ft, from my Defense Display I could track multiple of them, some were in circular search patterns. I made a mistake, trying to adjust my rudder to escape I exposed the prop directly to one of the torpedo, which homed in on me. I was unable to evade this one, and it damaged my towed array, propeller, passive sonar and torpedo tubes. I ordered a dive to 750 ft, under the thermal layer. Laid low, limping away at about 4 knots, until the remaining Victor III-class and Udaloy-class ship gave up pursuit.

The game does not depend on realistic graphical depiction at all. There's some cute animations sometimes, but most of it is just staring at maps and numbers and trying to hold your shit in when you hear active sonar pings.

Honestly, I'm spoiled. I love sub sims, I love retrocomputing. One day by luck someone in my city was selling a bunch of C64 games and one of them was Red Storm Rising. It aged quite well.
