I'm sorry, I mistook you for a run-off-the-mill GNU hater, but your case is clearly a lot more complicated than that. and yeah, you don't owe me anything. thanks for responding. -

that's curious. looks like the ideological vaccination has triggered an extreme auto-immune reaction on you. your mind is now rejecting the very thing that was meant to protect you, but the propaganda vaccine made you perceive it as the threat. that's fascinating!
you wanna talk more about that? -

humor is an escape route for me when I'm uncomfortable. people don't seem to like it. they think I'm not taking it seriously, but it's the opposite really. if I didn't take it so seriously, I wouldn't need to joke about it. -

> livre no sentido de livre pra vender quanto quiser pra quem quiser gera ganância e acumulação
regular pela propriedade coletiva dos meios de produção não resolve isso sem ferir liberdade?

daqui me parece estarmos falando de escalas e dinâmicas bem diferentes -

if I understand you correctly, there are two primary issues you're bringing up:
1. media covers RMS more than other FS speakers, and highlights aspects of his speech that he's not so much of an expert on
2. younger people would likely know better about their own obstacles in the path to free software
I think you'd agree that 1. is not RMS's fault. it's good for the movement when what he speaks about free software is published without distortion, uncommon as that is, but, I mean, you linked to a report that seemingly expresses surprise or disappointment that he didn't mention "open source" not even once. what else are they twisting, highlighting or omitting to advance whatever agenda they're trying to advance? (evidently it's not the free software agenda)
as for 2., yeah, absolutely, let's listen to them, but also let's keep in mind that fish's perception of the water all around them is quite different from that of someone who's outside the water, and sometimes it takes distance to see objectively something that those directly involved can't see, or can't identify as a problem. someone who spoke a number of times at free software conferences in her early teens went through massive and hurtful peer pressure towards her later teens. I'm pretty sure her opinion on the matter is not much different. other teens and grownups, subjected to such intense peer pressure and having their perceptions distorted by it, fail to notice it. let's listen to both! -

@freemo
heh, I've just realized I had a major stupidity leak yesterday
you were talking about MLK Jr, and I was here thinking "I didn't even know MLK had had a son"
it was only when I reread this today that I recalled that it was MLK himself was MLK Jr
so I take back the "I know nothing about his alignment". I do know one thing or another about him, I was just thinking you meant someone else, whom I knew nothing about, when I said I didn't. -

I'm not really disputing his alignment, that I know nearly nothing about, only the IMHO nonsensical argument that being neither repug nor demock makes one a centrist -

and?
I see you didn't say *all* of the points mentioned, but even if it did, how does that relate with differences in difficulty from person to person?
haha? -

and how much nonfree software do you actively avoid?
how much do you worry about your environmental impact?
how much do you struggle to save water, to reduce your non-renewable energy consumption, to produce less waste?
how much do you worry and do about social and economic inclusion of people who are discriminated and underprivileged?
how much effort does it take you to figure out how to reconcile these values, or which value to privilege, when they conflict with each other? -

I'm happy for you that your experience has been so effortless
me, I didn't decide to be vegan, I realized I was vegan, that my actions were not aligned with my stance, and have suffered for a long time without being able to take steps I felt I had an ethical obligation to take but was unable to. I've recently been able to take a few such steps, which were far from easy despite making me happier, and I still struggle to take others, and often feel miserable because it's so hard.
and that's the point about understanding and accepting that what's easy for someone may be impossibly hard for someone else. but of course I can understand that it may be very hard for you to understand and respect this. -

I can't understand what you're trying to imply. here are some possibilities that occur to me:
- surely in order to give energy one needs to have it to begin with, and ends up with less energy after giving it, so... that doesn't seem to lead to a sensible interpretation
- perhaps you're saying that one feels better after doing good, and so it shouldn't be a net drain. that seems sensible, but it misses the point that it still takes effort (AKA energy) to do good before it feels good, and if you don't have the energy to "invest", it's no use to know that you'd get plenty of "interest" on the investment, it just adds to the frustration -

consider the possibility that he perceived both parties as right-wing parties, which they are, and thus didn't identify with either, whether he was centrist or leftist
being for neither US major party does not imply one must be between them. there's plenty of ideological space beyond the very narrow band between them -
