ā€œJust install Linux on itā€ is the ā€œjust change the engine of your carā€ of tech.

Not everyone is a mechanic, not everyone wants to be a mechanic, and, if we want a world where freedom is the norm, we must stop expecting everyone to become a mechanic.

Note: this is not because these people are too dumb to be mechanics. It’s because they’re brain surgeons and space-shuttle pilots and they have three kids and they care for a loved one and they don’t have time to also be a mechanic.

Think about how many times in a day on the Web you click ā€œI agreeā€ when you really don’t agree just so you can get on with your day and use an everyday thing.

This is not how consent is supposed to work.

How sloppy OPSEC gave researchers an inside look at the exploit industry

ā€œThose government developers were testing out the WhatsApp malware on their own devices, and it was storing their discussions on the program’s servers.

The nation-state essentially had hacked itself and accidentally dumped highly sensitive information on the open internet—including details of its interactions with the secretive vendors who sell spyware to governments.ā€

Centralised web wisdom: if your web app doesn’t work without JavaScript, it is broken.

Peer web wisdom: If your web app works without JavaScript, it is not decentralised.

JavaScript isn’t the enemy; servers are.

(Read this as many times as necessary for it to really sink in as it’s literally the opposite of what folks, myself included, popularised on the centralised web for nearly two decades. If your app works without JavaScript, it means you have logic on a centralised server somewhere.)

If you ever meet a Google Policy Fellow remember that they cannot be trusted on privacy. Treat them as you would a lobbyist for a surveillance capitalist.

If you want legitimacy in privacy do not become a Google Policy Fellow.

      Better according to Panopticlick
      from Ind.ie Forum
We had an email from someone wondering why Better doesn’t make Safari appear safe according to Panopticlick. So Aral had a quick look at Panopticlick and concluded: Panopticlick are using their own simulated third-party trackers to check for tracker blocking. Better crawls the web to find actual third-party trackers and blocks them specifically so as not to break general functionality on the web. We crawl for the most popular trackers and block them to provide the greatest practical coverage ...
