Happy New Year, fediverse!

Here’s to working towards more freedom, justice, and equality in 2019. It’s not going to get any easier. It’s probably going to get harder. All that matters is we keep chipping away at the problem and working on the solutions. Every little thing we do, whether it’s raising awareness or reducing harm or creating ethical alternatives… it all matters.

Heck, the fact I can write this on the fediverse is reason enough to be hopeful.

@predrage While one of the reasons I left DiEM25 was that Julian was held with godlike/cult-like reverence and criticism was entirely disallowed – https://2018.ar.al/notes/farewell-not-goodbye/ – and while I do not agree with his anti-feminism or his cosying up to the far right, I will boost this because he also doesn’t deserve extradition to the US for the work the people at Wikileaks did in the past. If he’s extradited, it sets yet another terrible precedent for every journalist and whistleblower.

Sometimes you just have to stick a screwdriver in it.

PS. Can we please start calling people “people” and not “users”. “User” is an othering. Silicon Valley and surveillance capitalists are extractive corporations and have users. In ethical technology, we are people and we design and develop for our ourselves and for other people. https://ind.ie/ethical-design

@deni @ekaitz_zarraga Any business model that can achieve exponential growth so that they can have their exit (can be sold). None of the business models capable of fulfilling that core requirement are compatible with our welfare as individuals or with the continued existence of our habitat or of the commons.

I find it galling that Hassabis, who sold his company to Google / Alphabet and is happy to play his part in subjecting us all to new levels of surveillance capitalist abuse, says that it depends on society and humanity for how this will play out.
