Most Mastodon servers are operated by people like you, out of their pocket. Check if your server has a Patreon! It's usually on the "About this instance" link, where the rules are. Support your admins, especially if they're not me!
Yes, DAT archives are mutable, so you can update files on the same DAT link (if you hold the key). It's more than decentralised, it's p2p. Anybody that wants can also host your archive. The link is a reference to an archive, rather than specific machine as in the case of HTTP
@alcinnz@aral In my very limited experience, I love it. Very elegant, especially given the constraints they had to work within. Made perfect sense to me coming from Swift.

@aral Two weeks earlier... https://twitter.com/b9AcE/status/1025842577776566272 ;-) Not same stated rationale, but yours as well as their active support of especially a certain dictator were strong factors for my spending my last sufficient eyesight at Mastodon rather than supporting… that.
There was a time when I felt using those platforms against the grain was a good strategy for reaching people (see https://2018.ar.al/notes/spyware-vs-spyware/) but times have changed.
We now have beautiful free/open, federated/decentralised, and interoperable alternatives like Mastodon with more on the way. I now feel my energies are best used in experiencing them as fully as possible and contributing to making them better.
(@indie and @laura are both hosted there and I will move my own self-hosted instance there when I get a moment)
Remember: the more instances there are, the stronger the fediverse is. And wouldn’t it be nice for you to be the one making the rules, exactly as you want them, instead of Jack or some mini-Jack (an instance admin?) ;)
Folks: yes, venture capitalists and Silicon Valley gave us surveillance capitalism but now they say they’re sorry and want to give us the cure. Shouldn’t we just let them?

How about we take the billions that Google and other surveillance capitalists have been fined in the EU and invest them in organisations making ethical (free and open, decentralised, and interoperable) alternatives to surveillance capitalism.
