Remember how old and outdated 1960s music sounded to teenage ears in the 1990s? In 2 years, a song from 1990 will sound just as old and outdated to the teens of that time. I can tell that it's happening already, because whenever I play what was hip in the mid-1990s to a twenty-something, they'll remark on how it sounds "old school"...

If English were written more like the other European languages, it would be dense, clipped and full of accent marks. Imagine taking out all the silent letters, disambiguating all the vowels, adding accented letters for all the sounds that didn't exist in Latin, etc. It would look like a mix of Czech and Icelandic.

On every video about the Japanese language, there are people who say Japanese should be written in the Latin alphabet because kanji is too complex. Then Japanese people chime in to say that it would get confusing with all the homonyms. They're both wrong. No, Japan doesn't need to change anything. No, Latin letters wouldn't be more confusing: there is such a thing as accent marks (a fact often missed by Japanese and American people due to limited foreign language exposure).

Can't...resist....Must...have...crypto...portfolio! Keeping money in a bank account feels like a pretty bad investment when even the modestly growing currencies give better ROI than most stock funds.

God damn it, brain. I almost fell asleep this afternoon and deliberately deprived myself of sleep at that time so I could get a good night's sleep tonight. It's 01:15 and I'm not even a little bit drowsy. I have never in my life been able to correct my sleep cycle by going to bed early. The only thing that seems to work is the brutal and repeated application of an alarm clock to beat my brain into submission.

Screenshot from newly published Apple knowledge base article. Note how battery impedance is mentioned as one of the triggers for performance throttling. Then go read my toots that I posted earlier today about what I thought Apple's problem was. Called it. Totally called it.

I have watched the output voltage of a battery on an oscilloscope with circuits attached. It nowhere near being a steady voltage. Now remember how tiny the smoothing capacitors in a smartphone must be...

This was my first stereo amplifier, a Denon DRA-275 that my dad bought for me around the year 2000 when I was about 17. It had been sitting in the shed until I brought it with me last summer. I'm back for the remote control now. If we can't find it, I'm seriously tempted to buy a replacement on eBay, just so I have the complete system. It's a small but good HiFi amplifier. Same with the speakers. It's nearly 20 years old and still works. That's better than most stuff you buy these days.

If you're outside walking one day and everything goes pitch black: Don't worry. It's just my dad in Norway putting out every light source in the known universe before going to bed.

To prevent a power surge from causing a voltage drop on the regulated supply as the battery ages, one trick one could use is to throttle the power hungry processor a bit if the battery voltage is flopping around too much. As it happens, Apple products can measure their own battery health, information that can be used to make adjustments order to avoid problems later. The measurement probably isn't an exact science, so some people are going to get their phones throttled prematurely.

I remember one phone I had that would sometimes hang and reboot when it was running low on power. It didn't do that when it was brand new. I always chalked it up to battery degradation.

Electrically, a battery looks like a voltage source with a resistor in series with it. Series resistance makes voltage fall with rising amperage. The resistance gets greater as the battery ages, until the voltage regulator can't smooth out the voltage jumps anymore, disrupting the digital logic circuits.

My parents tint every experience they have in blue, but aren't aware of it. I was trying to tell my mother how much I enjoyed my night out yesterday, but she couldn't help but imply that I shouldn't have gone to the bar, because everyone who mattered was at the club, so therefore I had missed out. The more I shake the negativity they passed on to me, the more infuriating it is to try to have a conversation with them. Can't one just talk about nice things and leave it at that?

Gotta love how mom's all "I try to stay positive" in the middle of a long depressive rant. You can't have a conversation with her without hearing how terrible people are, how worried she is for her health or how unfortunate she's been in life. Dad talks less about that stuff, but when he does, he's no better than her. They're like an echo chamber of misery. Took me a long-ass time to unlearn that attitude after I moved out.
