After probably almost a decade I’ve just watched „A Beautiful Mind“ again. It‘s definitely a really good movie based on a special biography.

So sick of the user hostile practice of forcing people to call or chat with someone to cancel an account. If you can sign up online, you must be able to cancel online without a chat or call required.
I was cancelling a couple accounts for temporary budget reasons, and probably would have re-opened them in a couple months or so but I refuse to continue doing business with companies that have practices like this. This time it was NY Times and Scout Alarm.

@dansup In my opinion getting things right is much more important than getting things out fast. It’s about enabling great experiences on all levels and not about prioritizing a feature for the sake of having implemented a feature.

Alexander Gerst’s video letter to his grandchildren from the ISS has touched me deeply
(in the end it’s also a letter to us, reminding / challenging us to take care of planet of earth)
"this fragile spaceship called Earth is much smaller than most people can imagine“
With translation to English in a box below the video (ESA):

Useless (but fun) knowledge:
The correlation between „divorce rate in Maine“ and „per capita consumption of margarine“ is 99,26%

According to this article hackers have automated real-time phishing attacks against SMS based 2-factor-authentication and they’ve already targeted more than 1000 accounts
While any kind of 2FA is still much better than none, being able to do phishing at scale makes SMS based 2FA much more vunerable than before

It looks like there's some more scary news about Facebook.
Apparently companies like Netflix, Spotify & various banks had read, write and delete access to people's private messages. Facebook claimed the oversight was because they didn't consider them "service providers" 🤦♂️
Worse still, Yandex (a search engine with links to the Kremlin) had the same access, although they deny being aware of or ever using that access.

This is a super interesting and thought-provoking interview with a documentarist:
https://www.economist.com/open-future/2018/12/06/the-antidote-to-civilisational-collapse
My favorite quotes:
"Science has gone from being an optimistic source to a pessimistic source. Politics has gone from being dynamic to being static and managerial. And tech has brought in a system of feedback management that’s so seductive that we’re trapped.“
"People want a big narrative. What people don’t want are rants and columns. They want a story out of which you can draw ideas."

In some customers service chat software the send button basically is a fake because the support agents can watch you typing in real-time anyway

There’s a new open platform aggregating economic data from currently 45 providers such as the OECD or Eurostat
You can also retrieve the data via an API or integrations for R and Python.

@inmysocks Die Sendung mit der Maus with all its protagonist really is (children) television at its best. I think I even had a plush Käpt'n Blaubär back then.

It’s probably around 20 years ago that I’ve played snake for the first time on my dad’s Nokia phone
Today I’ve found out that @WAHa_06x36 has a really beautiful version of this game in the iOS App Store in which you have to play on different 3D objects
A bit more challenging than the original one, but it’s a lot of fun

'The Most Unwanted Song' by Soldier was made by asking people what they liked least in music, and then composing a song with all of those elements. So it features a soprano rapping about cowboys and a children's choir imploring you to shop at Walmart.
I imagine that everyone involved in this piece had an incredible amount of fun. You can hear it in the performance.
