@sooz This is actually RE: long-term storage, but mastodon.social apparently blocks noagendasocial.com. Old HDDs that "freeze" can often been made useful again by judiciously tapping them with a screwdriver handle (before powering them up!), as well as cooling them (in a freezer) before powering up -- be prepared to directly copy the data to a new unit. Engines can be prepared for long-term storage easily enough... and I wouldn't bet on any cloud service for long-term anything.
@PhoneBoy@TerryLee59@wolfspider@ChrisWilson So I've got a problem with this whole Zuck<->Borg thing. The Borg seek perfection through pragmatic methods... Facebag is a demonic curse written in php. Bit of a difference in underlying philosophies even if the surface effects of Facebagging, Facebag corporate behavior and assimilation are similar. You've seen Zuck's hoodie: he's a Sith lord; wrong sci-fi franchise, ya'all.
@EdwardTorvalds I noticed the performance improvement in Firefox over the last 2 years -- that was the pragmatic reason to ditch Chrome after so many years of loving happiness; at this point, I find Firefox both the superior browser, and the superior developer's tool.
@ChristinaO many moons ago as a hackerling, I treasured 2600... but then there was Phrack and all of the stuff on internet... and 2600 was consigned to nostalgia, though I sometimes watch the HOPE presentations.
@SLRock It depends on tax bracket. Clearly, you can have a lot of kids and cover everyone in the house if you can keep your personal income below certain limits and draw on the income of others.
There's no reason we can't have crazy cheap insurance under a single payer scheme, or even under a reasonably run private insurance system, but all of these outrages, both private insurance and Romneycare/Obamacare are going to leave us in a situation where single payer is the lesser evil, financially.

@EdwardTorvalds it's a legacy because the python decision came from the fact that they're keeping on with their python coders and using python. That is exactly why it's a legacy concern.
Would they have made the same choice if they could choose between Python, PHP, Go, and NodeJS? That "we already know Python" is why they chose Python (again) is a textbook case of legacy.
@EdwardTorvalds@newt In the case of instragram, this is a "legacy investment." The same reason a company keep using Java because they have a lot of Java programmers and a large, established Java codebase. It's similar to vendor lock-in: we'll keep with whatever stupid mistakes we made 10 years ago because it's cheaper than unfucking the mess and retraining the management to think inside of a new box.
