What no one wants to talk about is that the vast majority of immigration into the the US is economic.

Another untouchable topic is: what happens to the people left in a given country when their best, brightest, and strongest immigrate?

Will Medicins Sans Frontiers and other NGOs make up for the all the Pakistani doctors that relocated to the UK?

depends on the nature of the asylum claim. Political asylum is different to someone fleeing conflict, natural disasters, etc.

RE: Russians, cold war era -- as many went to Israel. Many of the asylum claims were made at embassies, rather than jumping borders. Their settlement deals likely included valuable intelligence. So yes, political, complex, not subject to easy generalization like conflict refugees are. :-)

The first available destination that accepts asylum. In the case of our theoretical Hondurans, Mexico accepts asylum claims.

Asylum is humanitarian, it isn't "a kind of immigration," as the protected person is supposed to return home when the threat is abated, or _formally_ enter the immigration/naturalization process.

If so, they'd seek it in a neighboring country. Asylum is refuge _from_ a country, not about where someone wants to immigrate to. So if one is seeking asylum from Honduras, they would seek it in Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc. Mexico (crossing 2 countries) would be migration, since it's no longer about fleeing the point of origin, but about choosing the destination as a matter of preference.
