Dear beloved toots, in september i will give a very short talk on "There won't be any bosses in the future." I hereby request your input, i have some ideas (#platforms, #collectives, #coops, reestablishment of crafting), but i wish to get more input by others. feel free to retoot, and share, show some #followerpower
Cyclists, bike couriers, BMXers, mountain bikers, commuters; anyone on pedal-powered wheels in London: join us for a special #ExtinctionRebellion ride this afternoon. Meet at Waterloo bridge, leaving around 6pm! đ´đ´âī¸đ´âī¸đ´âī¸đ´âī¸ Emergency #criticalmass
Anybody think the PM would be tweeting this (alongside government propaganda about being the greenest government ever) if XR weren't creating a stink in London?
@emi But 'hey we miss you' from an anonymous admin account feels really disingenuous to me. I feel like I should only hear that phrase from a friend or a relative.
That said maybe some people like a more friendly tone, could just be me being curmudgeonly!
@emi It sounds fine. I think also I personally appreciate if a platform is upfront about why they're contacting me. What's the reason for reaching out? Why do we want dormant users to engage more? For their benefit; for ours; for both? I'm super cynical when it's a company doing it, but for us it will be genuine and come from the heart and I think people will appreciate that :)
@Matt_Noyes How user friendly? Is having to have a login and remember a new set of credentials OK? And does it need to look good or is the information the most important thing? One page or multiple with hyperlinks?
I think most people are familiar with document editing so if avoiding logins, it's one page, and looks isn't so important, I'd say something like etherpad or cryptpad.
If it's multi page I'd say a mediawiki install with anonymous editing allowed.
That said I think you're right that MediaWiki isn't focused on ease of setup - customising, installing extensions, themes, etc is not as simple as e.g. Wordpress.
@chrisburnell For server-side code I think it's a relic of times gone by and it has stuck around for some reason? Fortran had a max line length for example so I guess terse variables helped stay within the boundaries.
Funny to see it come back with front-end markup, I guess to reduce bytes downloaded? Like bootstrap and tailwind have all their abbreviations like sm, lg, mb, py, etc. I don't like them to be honest.
@brainblasted This bugged me too. But I always clear history/cookies when closing the browser. So I did wonder if part of the rationale for this is that for 99% of people, if you've already signed up, then you are likely to be automatically logged in next time you visit. So the use case of needing to see a 'sign in' button is rare.
@jrss@librelounge We have a fairly successful store in the UK called Cex (computer exchange) where you can buy second hand electronics (computers, phones, etc). It's pretty good and they give warranties, but 2nd hand can still be too expensive for some. I think computer access in libraries is also important. Both usually are non-free encumbered though. Fixing and repurposing old hardware with Linux and giving it away is a good idea.
